refactor: assert retry and asyncUtilTimeout at runtime, delete the source scanner
Round 8 of the review asked for an AST. That was the right diagnosis of the
wrong problem: the question was never which parser to use, it was why a
test-timeout guard was parsing JavaScript at all.
It got there one reasonable step at a time. The guard enforces two rules no
Vitest config can report — a per-test `retry`, and Testing Library's
`asyncUtilTimeout` — so it read them out of source text, and the review found a
new valid spelling it missed in five consecutive rounds: a trailing comment,
nested parens in `it.each([makeCase()])`, a member-access prefix, the shorthand
`{ retry }`, an aliased import, a non-literal title. Each fix was correct and
each made it more parser-shaped, until it carried eight helpers doing quote
tracking and bracket balancing.
Both rules are observable at runtime, exactly:
- `vitest.setup.shared.mts` is loaded by all six projects and reads
`ctx.task.retry` — the value Vitest resolved for the test. That covers
strictly more than the scan did: a per-test option, a `describe` option
inherited by children, a project-level setting, and a `--retry` flag typed at
a command line, which the scan could never see since it only read npm scripts.
- `clients/web/src/test/asyncUtilTimeout.test.ts` asserts
`getConfig().asyncUtilTimeout`, the value this project's own waitFors read.
Neither has a spelling to anticipate, so neither can be outrun by a new one.
Both were observed firing before being trusted.
The guard keeps only what it can answer by asking Vitest: resolved budgets,
project-level retry, config discovery, and that each project still loads the
setup file — the one thing about the runtime assertion a config CAN report.
868 lines to 361, every scanner helper gone, and 33 of 48 unit tests deleted
because they pinned edge cases of a thing that no longer exists.
storybookSetup.ts goes with it. At the library's own value its configure() call
was a no-op, and the assertion is what pins the number.
AGENTS.md gains the general rule: a rule about what the code DOES is asserted at
runtime, not read out of the source — reach for a verify:* guard when the
question is about configuration, which a tool can be asked to resolve.

chore: address Copilot review round 1 (#2192)
- `useEmaIdpLoginState`: the effect-triggered `refresh()` was discarded with `void`, but it does not own its failures — `getEmaIdpLoginState` awaits `storage.getIdpSession`, which rejects when the backend is unreachable. Terminate with `.catch()` and leave `loginState` untouched, as `logout` already does. Covered by a new test that also asserts no unhandled rejection escapes. - Correct the history: the plugin was *client-local*, declared by both `clients/web` and `clients/tui`. The root could reach neither, since Node resolution walks up rather than down — that, not web-exclusivity, is why `core/react/` went unlinted. - Correct the enforcement claim: `clients/tui` registers the plugin but deliberately enables only `rules-of-hooks` and `exhaustive-deps`, so `set-state-in-effect` and `refs` hold for `clients/web` and `core/react/` only. Says so in AGENTS.md and in the Copilot mirror, which would otherwise have reviewers cite rules the TUI gate does not run. chore: lint core/react with eslint-plugin-react-hooks (#2192)
`eslint-plugin-react-hooks` was a `clients/web` devDependency only, and each client's `eslint .` is scoped to its own directory — so the whole hook rule set had never looked at `core/react/`, a directory of nothing but React hooks. "Neither surface has JSX" was the stated reason and was never a good one: the rules judge hooks, not JSX. Add the plugin at the root and apply it in a `core/react/**` block (scoped there rather than to all of `core/**`, since the rules key off the `use` prefix), with `exhaustive-deps` promoted to `error` as `clients/web` does. Resolve the 15 findings it then reports: - `useSettingsDraft` / `useClientSettingsDraft` seed their draft during render instead of in a `targetId`/`opened`-keyed effect, so the previous target's values never reach the DOM — the same rule `clients/web` spells `useValueChange`. Their "latest value" refs move from render-time writes into an effect; every reader (the debounce timer, `flush`, `onChange`) runs after a commit, so a post-commit write is what they need. - The three async loaders keep their effects behind justified inline disables: `set-state-in-effect` follows a call into an async function without modelling the `await`, verified against a minimal hook whose only setState is in a continuation. - `useInitialConfig`'s cleanup bump keeps reading `generation.current` at teardown — the rule's "copy it into a variable" advice would restore a stale request token and let a superseded response commit. fix(core): read state stores during render instead of re-syncing in an effect
Every state-subscription hook in core/react/ seeded local React state from its store prop and re-synced it inside a useEffect. That shape paints one frame of the previous store's data when the prop changes (switching servers), and loses any event dispatched between the render that took the snapshot and the effect that attached the listener. Convert all 16 to useSyncExternalStore through a new shared useStoreSnapshot, following useManagedListError (#1954). useSyncExternalStore needs a referentially stable snapshot, and these getters hand back a defensive copy, so TypedEventTarget now keeps a per-event-type dispatch counter (getEventRevision) that the snapshot is cached against. A contents comparison would not do: MessageLogState folds a response into its request entry by mutating that entry in place, which a shallow compare reports as unchanged. The bump lives on the dispatchEvent override so no dispatch — including a hand-rolled CustomEvent — can bypass it. useInspectorClient is included though the issue did not list it; its nine subscribed slices made the stale frame most visible. Its lastError stays useState (accumulated from events, no getter to read back) but resets on client swap during render rather than in an effect. The settings-draft and async fetch hooks are deliberately untouched: the former hold genuinely local editable state, the latter are I/O rather than store subscriptions. Also answers the issue's open question. react-hooks/set-state-in-effect never fired here because eslint-plugin-react-hooks has never linted core/react/ at all — it is a clients/web devDependency and the root config loads no React plugin. Corrected the config comment that gave "no JSX" as the reason; the gap itself is #2192, measured at 15 findings, none of them in the hooks converted here. chore(scripts): treat an expression-built script name as forbidden too (#2146)
Copilot, first review:
- The guard read only literal names, so `npm run smoke:web:${{ matrix.browser }}`
and `npm run local:${{ matrix.task }}` walked past it — the one form in which
a forbidden engine reaches CI without anyone typing its name. It already
refused an expression-valued SMOKE_BROWSER for that exact reason; this applies
the reasoning consistently. Its limit is now stated: a fully opaque
`npm run ${{ matrix.script }}` names no family and is not detectable.
- The module header claimed the gate adds "the non-Chromium engine passes";
it adds Firefox only, and WebKit belongs to neither tier.
- eslint.config.js:33 still said `npm run ci` — the last stale reference.
- AGENTS.md read "everything from `smoke` rightward is `local:gate` only",
which is two claims wrong: smoke and Storybook run in GitHub CI too, and
`pack:verify` is in neither tier.

chore(lint): enable no-floating-promises in all five ESLint scopes
A floated promise is invisible at review time — the call reads like an awaited one minus four characters — and the unhandled rejection it produces surfaces in a different test, in a different file, as a stack pointing at SDK internals. In #1947 two un-held `callTool` calls made `npm run ci` unpassable and took a full investigation to attribute; the fix was two lines. `@typescript-eslint/no-floating-promises` catches the class outright, so enable it at `error` everywhere. The rule is type-aware and `tseslint.configs.recommended` is not, so each scope's config gains a parser project. The four clients name their own tsconfig projects (both of them — `src` and `__tests__`/`server` live in different ones). The root scope has no tsconfig at all, so add `tsconfig.lint.json`: a lint-only project covering `core/**`, `test-servers/src/**`, and `vitest.shared.mts`, emitting nothing and gating nothing. It sets `moduleResolution: bundler` deliberately — under NodeNext `core/`'s extensionless imports fail to resolve, every import degrades to `any`, and the rule silently stops seeing promises at all. Measured surface, and the fixes: - core (2) — `stream.close()` in two Hono `onAbort` listeners. Hono invokes subscribers with a bare `subscriber()`, so a promise returned from the listener is floated one layer up; `closeAbortedStream` owns the rejection where it can actually be owned. - tui (5) — `handleDisconnect` had no catch of its own and its only caller is a key handler that cannot await, so a failing disconnect was a live unhandled rejection; it now surfaces the message the way `handleConnect` does. The rest are `void` at callers that genuinely cannot await, over callees that already own their failures. - web (92) — 83 are Storybook `expect(...)`, which is instrumented and returns a promise, now awaited (`scrollAreaStoryAssertions` is async for the same reason). Two tests were asserting against a provider call they never awaited. `open(url)` in both web servers now warns instead of escaping a synchronous callback. - cli, launcher — already clean. Type-aware linting costs time: `clients/web`'s `eslint .` goes from ~8s to ~19s, inside `validate`. Narrowing the loaded projects is the lever if that needs reducing later; dropping the rule is not. chore: close a batch of quality-gate & tidy gaps (#1785 #1787 #1789 #1790 #1767) (#1792)
* chore: close a batch of quality-gate & tidy gaps (#1785 #1787 #1789 #1790 #1767) Bundles five small, related tidy/gate items into one PR: - #1785: delete the dead src/types/navigation.ts InspectorTab (0 importers; duplicated/drifted from utils/inspectorTabs InspectorTabId). src/types/ now holds only ambient .d.ts stubs. - #1787: add src/hooks/** to the web coverage `include` (it was silently outside the ≥90 gate) and add tests for the two untested hooks, useServerJsonImport and useImportClientConfig, bringing every hook to ≥90 on lines/statements/functions/branches. - #1789: widen clients/{cli,tui,launcher} format/format:check to their top-level configs; add root format:shared / format:check:shared covering test-servers/src/**, vitest.shared.mts, and the repo-root eslint.config.js. - #1790: pin prettier to an exact version (3.8.4, dropping the ^3.8.1 caret) in all five package.json files so the format gate's verdict can't shift with an in-range patch bump; lockfiles synced. - #1767: its root-file format+lint gap is closed here (format:shared + a new lint:shared via a second files block in the root eslint.config.js; web/server/ was already gated in #1788). Its larger cli/tui __tests__ typecheck piece (76 type errors) is split out to #1791. Prettier-normalized the newly-covered files (pure formatting). No runtime behavior change. `npm run ci` green. Audited all 885 tracked source files — now fully prettier-clean. - Export VALIDATE_DEBOUNCE_MS / COLLAPSE_DELAY_MS / HIGHLIGHT_DURATION_MS from useServerJsonImport and use them in the test instead of hardcoded 300/1000/250 (so a tuned constant can't silently desync the test). - Assert the symmetric renameErrors["alpha"] alongside ["beta"] so a one-directional collision-check regression fails. - Comment the blank-rename test as exercising a UI-unreachable defensive branch (canImport gates submit). - Un-stale the two specification/v2_ux_interfaces_plan.md references to the now-removed navigation.ts InspectorTab. npm run ci green. The durable, standing version of #1789's one-shot audit; negative-tested. - Obs 3: bring src/theme/** under the coverage gate (21/23 files were already ≥90 transitively; add Paper.test.tsx for the one laggard, Paper.ts). src/App.tsx (~4.5k lines, ~42% branches) is converted from a silent omission into an explicit, documented exclusion (comment on the coverage `include` + AGENTS.md) — gating it is a dedicated effort, not a whitelist tweak. npm run ci green (the new guard reports 885/885 tracked source files gated). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XNdjEPKLG637X8YmhDiEk5 * chore: address PR #1792 round-4 findings (guard hardening, docs, exclusion list) - Harden verify-format-coverage: only harvest format:check globs from scripts transitively reachable from `validate` (via npm run refs), so an unwired/renamed format:check no longer counts as coverage. Negative-tested — renaming clients/web format:check to an unreferenced name now fails the guard (627 files flagged) instead of passing. - Name src/main.tsx and src/index.ts (browser + bin bootstraps) alongside src/App.tsx in the coverage-include comment and AGENTS.md, so the documented exclusion list is complete rather than claiming App.tsx is the only one. - Doc sync: document verify:format-coverage (AGENTS.md + README script table + scripts/ layout line), fix the `validate` ordering (verify:format- coverage now runs before validate:core) in AGENTS.md and README, and update the quoted globs to the uniform *.{ts,tsx, mts, cts,js,jsx, mjs, cjs} / test-servers *.{ts,tsx,mts,cts}. npm run ci green. Negative-tested. - eslint.config.js: widen the shared `files` block to test-servers/src/**/*.{ts,tsx,mts,cts} to match the widened lint:shared glob, so a future .mts/.cts there is lint-gated, not just prettier-gated. - AGENTS.md: scope the "uniform extension set" claim to client globs (core stays {ts,tsx}, shared {ts,tsx, mts, cts}), with verify:format-coverage as the backstop — removing the self-contradiction with the line below. npm run ci green.
