## Summary
This PR adds LocalTransport and RemoteTransport separation with URL
template variable support for remote servers, enabling e.g. multi-tenant
deployments with configurable endpoints.
**Key additions:**
- LocalTransport (for Packages) and RemoteTransport (for Remotes)
- URL template variables for remote transports (e.g., `{tenant_id}` in
URLs)
- Pattern validation ensuring URLs are URL-like while allowing templates
- Full test coverage via Go validator tests and documentation examples
## ⚠️ server.json Update
This PR updates the `server.json` schema. A new schema version will be
cut after this lands.
## Problem
The current schema describes URL templating with `{curly_braces}` for
transports but provides no mechanism for Remote contexts to define what
those variables should resolve to, making the feature unusable for
remote servers.
Referenced issue: #394
- Users need multi-tenant remote servers with different endpoints per
deployment
- Each tenant/region has its own URL (e.g., `us-cell1.example.com`,
`emea-cell1.example.com`)
- Current schema doesn't support parameterized remote URLs
## Solution
### Schema Architecture
**LocalTransport** (for Package context):
```typescript
LocalTransport = StdioTransport | StreamableHttpTransport | SseTransport
```
- Used in Package context (non-breaking rename of existing behavior)
- Variables in `{curly_braces}` reference parent Package
arguments/environment variables
- Supports all three transport types including stdio
**RemoteTransport** (for Remote context):
```typescript
RemoteTransport = (StreamableHttpTransport | SseTransport) + { variables: object }
```
- Extends StreamableHttp/Sse via `allOf` composition - no duplication!
- Adds `variables` object for URL templating
- Only supports streamable-http and sse (stdio not valid for remotes)
### Key Changes
**1. Schema Updates** (`openapi.yaml`, `server.schema.json`):
- Added `LocalTransport` union type for Package context
- Added `RemoteTransport` with `allOf` composition extending base
transports
- Updated Package to reference `LocalTransport`
- Updated remotes to reference `RemoteTransport`
- Added URL pattern validation: `^https?://[^\\s]+$` to both
StreamableHttp and SSE
- Removed `format: uri` from SSE (was blocking template variables)
**2. Go Types** (`pkg/model/types.go`):
- Base `Transport` struct unchanged for Package context
- `RemoteTransport` struct for remotes with `Variables` field
- Both work with existing validation infrastructure
**3. Validators** (`internal/validators/`):
- `validateRemoteTransport()` validates Remote-specific constraints
- `collectRemoteTransportVariables()` extracts available variables
- `IsValidTemplatedURL()` validates template variables reference defined
variables
- `IsValidRemoteURL()` handles template variable substitution before
localhost check
- 6 new test cases for remote transport variable validation
**4. Documentation Examples** (`generic-server-json.md`):
- Remote Server with URL Templating (StreamableHttp with `{tenant_id}`)
- SSE Remote with URL Templating (SSE with `{tenant_id}`)
- Local Server with URL Templating (Package with `{port}`)
- All examples validate via existing `validate-examples` tool
## Example: Remote Transport with Variables
```json
{
"remotes": [
{
"type": "streamable-http",
"url": "https://api.example.com/mcp/{tenant_id}/{region}",
"variables": {
"tenant_id": {
"description": "Tenant identifier",
"isRequired": true,
"choices": ["us-cell1", "emea-cell1", "apac-cell1"]
},
"region": {
"description": "Deployment region",
"isRequired": true
}
}
}
]
}
```
Clients configure the variables, and `{tenant_id}` and `{region}` get
replaced to connect to tenant-specific endpoints like
`https://api.example.com/mcp/us-cell1/east`.
## Architecture Details
**Context-based variable resolution:**
- **Package + LocalTransport**: `{port}` references `--port` argument or
`PORT` env var from parent Package
- **Remote + RemoteTransport**: `{tenant_id}` references
`variables.tenant_id` defined in the transport itself
- **Code reuse**: StreamableHttp/Sse definitions shared via `allOf`, not
duplicated
- **Validation**: Template variables validated against available
variables for each context

## Follow-on Work
Follow-on work will be done to adopt the feedback in
https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/pull/570#issuecomment-3367417636
regarding variable naming/prioritzation/scoping conventions, but should
not have any impact on the shape being introduced here (just
validations).

Implements icon support based on the Model Context Protocol
specification, allowing servers to specify display icons with optional
size, MIME type, and theme variants.
## Changes
- Add `Icon` type to `pkg/model/types.go` with struct tags for automatic
API validation
- Add `icons` field to `ServerJSON` in `pkg/api/v0/types.go`
- Add icon validation in `internal/validators/validators.go`:
- Only HTTPS URLs allowed (no HTTP or data URIs)
- Maximum URL length of 255 characters
- Validates absolute URLs with proper scheme
- Update JSON schema and OpenAPI documentation with Icon definitions
- Add comprehensive test cases for icon validation
- Add example icon to seed.json (Airtable server)
- Change `websiteUrl` validation to HTTPS-only for consistency
## Implementation Details
The implementation uses a two-layer validation architecture:
1. **Huma framework** validates struct tags (`required`, `maxLength`,
`enum`, `pattern`) and returns 422 for violations
2. **Custom validators** handle business logic (HTTPS scheme
requirement, absolute URL requirement) and return 400 for violations
This approach leverages Huma's automatic validation while keeping
business-specific rules in the validator layer.
## Icon Field Specification
- `src` (required): HTTPS URL to icon resource, max 255 characters
- `mimeType` (optional): One of `image/png`, `image/jpeg`, `image/jpg`,
`image/svg+xml`, `image/webp`
- `sizes` (optional): Array of size strings in "WxH" format or "any" for
scalable formats
- `theme` (optional): Either "light" or "dark" to indicate intended
background
Multiple icons can be provided (e.g., for different themes or sizes).
## Summary
This PR adds two important improvements to ensure data integrity:
1. **Adds server name format validation at the API layer** to match the
database constraint from migration 008
2. **Includes migration 008 to clean up invalid data** before applying
strict constraints in migration 009
## Changes
### Server Name Validation
- Enforces validation at the API layer matching the database constraint
- **Namespace pattern**: `[a-zA-Z0-9][a-zA-Z0-9.-]*[a-zA-Z0-9]`
- Must start and end with alphanumeric characters
- Can contain dots and hyphens in the middle
- **Name pattern**: `[a-zA-Z0-9][a-zA-Z0-9._-]*[a-zA-Z0-9]`
- Must start and end with alphanumeric characters
- Can contain dots, underscores, and hyphens in the middle
- Provides clear, user-friendly error messages indicating which part is
invalid
- Uses DRY approach with composed regex patterns
### Migration 008: Data Cleanup
- Removes servers with invalid names or empty versions (5 servers
affected in production)
- Fixes invalid status values by setting them to 'active' (1 server
affected)
- Removes duplicate name+version combinations
- Includes comprehensive safety checks to prevent accidental data loss
- Must run before migration 009 which adds strict constraints
## Testing
- All validator tests pass
- Migration includes safety checks that match production data
- CI verification included

## Summary
Added validation to reject server names with multiple slashes, ensuring
consistency between JSON schema pattern and API validation.
- Count slashes in parseServerName() and reject if > 1
- Add ErrMultipleSlashesInServerName error constant
- Add unit tests in validators_test.go
- Add integration test in publish_test.go
## Motivation and Context
Fixes#471. The JSON schema regex pattern `^[^/]+/[^/]+$` only allows a
single slash in server names, but the API validation was not enforcing
this constraint. This inconsistency
allowed invalid server names like `com.example/server/path` to be
published.
## How Has This Been Tested?
- Unit tests added to verify slash validation logic
- Integration tests added to verify the publish endpoint rejects
multi-slash names
- Tested various edge cases: trailing slashes, consecutive slashes,
URL-like paths
- All existing tests pass
## Breaking Changes
None. This change only adds validation to reject previously invalid
server names that shouldn't have been accepted.
## Types of changes
- [x] Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
- [ ] New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
- [ ] Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing
functionality to change)
- [ ] Documentation update
## Checklist
- [x] I have read the [MCP
Documentation](https://modelcontextprotocol.io)
- [x] My code follows the repository's style guidelines
- [x] New and existing tests pass locally
- [x] I have added appropriate error handling
- [x] I have added or updated documentation as needed
## Additional context
- The fix ensures server names follow the intended format:
`namespace/name` (e.g., `com.example/my-server`)
- This validation aligns the API behavior with the existing JSON schema
regex pattern
- Test coverage includes edge cases like `com.example//server`,
`com.example/server/`, and `a/b/c/d/e/f`
- The error message clearly indicates the issue: "server name cannot
contain multiple slashes"
<!-- Provide a brief summary of your changes -->
Validates that server versions are not ranges.
**NB:** This also introduces `validateVersion` as a check on the
top-level `ValidateServerJSON`, as previously we were only checking
version ranges of packages via `validatePackageField` (i.e. `latest`
would have still been a valid top level server version), despite #413's
wording suggesting otherwise.
## Motivation and Context
Solves https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/issues/415
## How Has This Been Tested?
Tests added in `internal/validators/validators_test.go`
`make check` is clean.
## Breaking Changes
As per @domdomegg's comment, we should
> check nobody has done this in the existing registry data (if they
have, we should explore and understand why people have done this / if
it's valid etc.).

## Summary
- Adds validation to prevent servers from being published with version
string "latest"
- "latest" is now a reserved keyword that cannot be used as a version
string
## Implementation
- Added `ErrReservedVersionString` error constant
- Created `validateVersion` function to check for reserved version
strings
- Integrated validation into the package field validation flow
- Added comprehensive test coverage

This is so we can potentially support things like
https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/discussions/333 in
future more easily, as I imagine we might want to.
Adds an optional `subfolder` field to the Repository object in
server.json schema to support MCP servers located within subdirectories
of monorepo structures.
## Motivation and Context
Addresses issue #360 .
The current MCP registry schema doesn't explicitly define how to
reference servers that are located within a subdirectory of a Git
repository (a "monorepo" structure). This is a common pattern (e.g.,
[microsoft/mcp](https://github.com/microsoft/mcp) &
[awslabs/mcp](https://github.com/awslabs/mcp).
## How Has This Been Tested?
- **Validator tests**: Added 6 new test cases covering valid subfolders
and security validation (path traversal, absolute paths, invalid
characters, etc.)
- **Schema validation**: All 11 examples in `examples.md` validate
successfully against both `server.schema.json` and
`registry-schema.json`
- **End-to-end validation**: Publisher tool (`mcp-publisher init`) works
correctly and generates valid templates without subfolder
- **Backward compatibility**: Existing server.json files without
subfolder continue to work unchanged
## Breaking Changes
**None.** This is a fully backward-compatible change:
- The `subfolder` field is optional (uses `omitempty` JSON tag)
- Existing server.json files work unchanged
- Publisher tools generate valid templates without subfolder by default
- All existing validation and schemas remain compatible
## Types of changes
- [ ] Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
- [x] New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
- [ ] Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing
functionality to change)
- [x] Documentation update
## Checklist

Documentation](https://modelcontextprotocol.io)
- [x] My code follows the repository's style guidelines
- [x] New and existing tests pass locally
- [x] I have added appropriate error handling
- [x] I have added or updated documentation as needed
### Implementation Details
**Schema Changes:**
- Added `subfolder` property to Repository definition in
`server.schema.json` and `openapi.yaml`
- Field is optional with description and example (`"src/everything"`)
**Go Model:**
- Added `Subfolder string` field to Repository struct with
`json:"subfolder,omitempty"` tag
- Maintains backward compatibility through omitempty behavior
**Security-Focused Validation:**
- Validates subfolder is a clean relative path (no leading `/`)
- Prevents path traversal attacks (no `..` sequences)
- Blocks malformed paths (no trailing `/`, empty segments, invalid
characters)
- Uses regex validation for allowed characters: `^[a-zA-Z0-9\-_./]+$`
**Documentation:**
- Added monorepo example to `examples.md` demonstrating subfolder usage
- Updated `repository_references.md` with concise subfolder
documentation
- Maintained consistency across all documentation with same example path
**Testing:**
- 6 new integration tests in validator covering security and format
validation
- Updated example count validation tool for new example
- All existing tests continue to pass
### Design Decisions
1. **Optional by design**: Most servers don't need subfolder
(single-repo pattern is common)
2. **Clean separation**: Repository URL stays clean, subfolder is
separate metadata
3. **Security first**: Comprehensive validation prevents common
path-based attacks
4. **Publisher tool unchanged**: Default templates don't include
subfolder to avoid confusion for typical use cases
This enables publishers with monorepo structures to clearly specify
server locations while maintaining simplicity for the common
single-repository case.

## How Has This Been Tested?
Has some unit and integration tests, still needs proper testing of the
different registry types
## Breaking Changes
Yes, new package uploads will need extra verification

## Summary
Closes a validation gap that allowed servers to be published with
unsupported registry types and base URLs.
## Changes
- **Registry Type Validation**: Only allow `npm`, `pypi`, `oci`,
`nuget`, `mcpb`
- **Registry Base URL Validation**: Enforce strict allowlist of official
registry URLs
- **Required Fields**: Registry type and base URL required when package
identifier provided
- **Comprehensive Tests**: Clear test structure showing valid vs invalid
cases side-by-side
## Validation Rules
- `npm` → `https://registry.npmjs.org`
- `pypi` → `https://pypi.org`
- `oci` → `https://docker.io`
- `nuget` → `https://api.nuget.org`
- `mcpb` → `https://github.com` or `https://gitlab.com`
All other combinations are rejected with clear error messages.

## Motivation and Context
Closes#145
Add comprehensive validation for named arguments in MCP server packages
to ensure argument names, values, and defaults follow proper format
conventions. This prevents common issues where argument names contain
embedded values or descriptions, and where values/defaults incorrectly
start with the argument name itself.
Key changes:
- Add ArgumentValidator with validation rules for named argument format
- Enhance PackageValidator to validate runtime and package arguments
- Update import process to log warnings for invalid servers instead of
failing
- Fix 396 servers in seed.json with malformed named arguments
- Extended `validate-examples` tool to apply the object validator (it
was completely missed before)
- Add comprehensive test coverage for all validation scenarios
Examples of fixes applied:
- "--directory <path>" → "--directory" with value "<path>"
- "--with-editable $REPO" → "--with-editable" with value "$REPO"
- "recipient@example.com" → "--recipient" (proper argument naming)
All servers now pass validation during both API publishing and data
import.

## How Has This Been Tested?
With ad-hoc unit tests.
Manual integration tests of built artifact and the seed data.
## Breaking Changes
New registrations need to follow the argument name conventions,
otherwise the import would fail for the inconsistent servers.
