Deletes `complete.md` and cleans up the last references to the
pre-restructuring docs layout.
## Why `complete.md` goes
It is 2,944 lines (31% of all documentation lines in the repo)
self-described as *"all documentation from the docs/ directory compiled
into a single markdown file"*. But:
- **No generator exists.** No make target, no workflow, no script. `grep
-rn "complete\.md"` finds **zero** references anywhere in the repo.
- **It mirrors a docs tree that no longer exists** — `docs/guides/`,
`docs/explanations/`, `docs/concepts/`.
- **All 72 of its relative links are broken**, and six of the basenames
it references exist nowhere in the repo.
- **~14 current docs are missing from it entirely** (`about.mdx`,
`authentication.mdx`, `package-types.mdx`, both CHANGELOGs, ...).
- **Its `server.json` examples pin the superseded `2025-07-09` schema**
(current is `2025-12-11`).
The strongest argument is its own last commit. [PR
#1278](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/pull/1278)
closed [issue
#767](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/issues/767) — a
real user-reported CLI flag bug — by editing **only `complete.md`**. A
genuine fix landed in a file nobody reads, while the docs a reader would
actually find stayed wrong.
A generated file with no generator degrades into a trap: authoritative
enough that people edit it, with nothing validating it. If the
LLM-consumption use case is worth keeping, the right shape is a `make
docs-bundle` target plus a `check-docs-bundle` CI job mirroring the
existing `check-schema` pattern — happy to do that instead if you would
rather keep it.
## Remaining stale references
| File | Was | Now |
|---|---|---|
| `contributing/add-package-registry.md` | Add
`docs/guides/publishing/publish-[yourregistry].md`, update
`docs/guides/publishing/README.md` | Add a section to
`package-types.mdx`. These were the **last live references** to the
obsolete `docs/guides/` layout outside `complete.md` |
| `administration/maintainer-onboarding.md` | Add them to "Current key
maintainers" in README | "Registry Working Group" — the section that
actually exists |
| `reference/README.md` | Omitted 6 reference docs | Adds
`api/extensions.md`, `api/openapi.yaml`, `api/CHANGELOG.md`,
`server-json/CHANGELOG.md`, `server-json/CONTRIBUTING.md`,
`server-json/draft/` |
| `docs/README.md` | Index omitted `community-projects.md` | Listed |
| `reference/api/generic-registry-api.md` | `PUT .../versions/{version}`
"not implemented by official registry" | It **is** implemented
([edit.go:36](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/blob/main/internal/api/handlers/v0/edit.go#L36)),
and `official-registry-api.md` already lists it as an admin endpoint |
| `reference/api/official-registry-api.md` | Omitted 3 registered routes
| Adds `POST /v0.1/validate` (which `mcp-publisher validate` calls),
`GET /v0.1/ping`, `GET /v0.1/version`, and notes these plus `/health`
are absent from `openapi.yaml` |
| `server-json/official-registry-requirements.md` | Per-registry
verification → `quickstart.mdx` | → `package-types.mdx`, which has an
Ownership Verification section per registry |
| `design/design-principles.md` | Sections 1,2,3,4,**6**,7 | Renumbered
1–6 |
| `contributing/releasing.md` | Steps 1,2,3,**5**,6 | Renumbered 1–5 |
I left the sibling `DELETE` claim in `generic-registry-api.md` alone —
it is accurate, no DELETE route is registered (the `http.MethodDelete`
hit in `server.go` is CORS config, not a route).
## Staleness banners rather than rewrites
**`design/tech-architecture.md`** is substantially fictional. Rather
than a vague "may be outdated", the banner lists what I verified is
wrong:
- Describes Helm-chart deployment; the registry is a plain `Deployment`
([registry.go:65](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/blob/main/deploy/pkg/k8s/registry.go#L65)).
Helm is used only for third-party components.
- Diagram shows a `StatefulSet` on port **27017** — MongoDB's port. The
DB is PostgreSQL on 5432 via the CloudNativePG operator.
- Documents a `verify-domain` challenge flow (`POST /verify-domain`,
`/verify-domain/check`, server-issued tokens) that **was never built**.
- Documents `/admin/*` routes that are not registered.
- Says the DB stores user auth state and DNS verification records; only
`servers` and `server_extensions` tables exist.
**`design/roadmap.md`** still says "Phase 1: MVP/Go-Live (Current
Focus)" ~11 months after launch. I added a dated note rather than
inventing a current phase — that is a working-group call.
## Verification
All **101** remaining relative links across every `.md`/`.mdx` in the
repo resolve. The only two non-resolving matches are the intentional
`[project-name](link)` template placeholder and the moderation link
fixed in #1518.

Follow-up to #1207, addressing items from the cargo validator review.
**Scoped to cargo + shared helpers — no behavior change for existing
npm/pypi/nuget/oci/mcpb publishers.** Safe to merge and promote.
### Changes
**SSRF hardening of the two-call README retrieval**
- Pin the step-2 README URL to an allowed host (`static.crates.io` in
prod; the base host under test) *before* fetching, so a metadata
response can't steer the validator at an internal/attacker host.
- `CheckRedirect` policy pins every redirect hop to the same allowlist
(the initial URL being pinned isn't enough if an upstream 3xx is
followed).
- Cap the README body with `io.LimitReader` (5 MiB).
> Not publisher-exploitable today (the URL comes from crates.io), so
this is defense-in-depth — but it makes the "host is pinned" guarantee
hold in code rather than rely on crates.io's behavior.
**Clearer status handling** (previously any non-5xx/non-200 collapsed to
"not found")
- **429** → reported as transient/retryable, at both the metadata and
README steps.
- **403** → disambiguated via the crate-version endpoint:
genuinely-missing stays "not found"; *exists-but-no-README* gets an
actionable "add a README with `mcp-name` and republish" message (mirrors
the NuGet validator). This continues the 5xx-vs-403 diagnostic split
@P4ST4S started in the #1207 review — thanks!
**Shared `containsMCPNameToken` helper**
Boundary-anchored ownership-token match (prevents prefix confusion, e.g.
a README declaring `io.github.acme/widget-pro` satisfying a claim for
`io.github.acme/widget`), used here **by the cargo validator only**.
Adopting it in PyPI/NuGet is a separate follow-up because it's a
behavior change for those already-live registries.
**Tests & docs**
Hermetic positive `ServerNameFormats`; combined fixture gains a
version-existence endpoint + cases for 403-missing vs 403-no-README,
429, and prefix-confusion rejection; new foreign-README-host (SSRF)
test; internal test for the helper. Docs: list `crates.io` in the
registry-requirements list + the `Package` model doc.
### Testing
`go build`, `go vet`, full `./internal/validators/...` suite (incl. live
cargo positive), `make check-schema`, `validate-examples` all pass. No
new `golangci-lint` findings.

## Summary
- Adds a short "Recommended: Namespaced Subkeys" subsection to
`official-registry-requirements.md`, documenting the reverse-DNS subkey
convention for `publisher-provided` metadata with one worked example
- Explicitly notes this is not enforced, to avoid churning the ~15
existing flat-key examples elsewhere in the docs
Closes#477
## Test plan
- [ ] Render the file on GitHub and verify the new subsection appears
right after the `Publisher-Provided Metadata` size-limit note

Adds support for the Quay.io container registry to the OCI validator.
This allows MCP servers hosted on Quay.io to be registered and validated
by the official registry.
## Motivation and Context
<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
Quay.io is a major, trusted public OCI registry widely used by the
cloud-native and open-source communities. Currently, attempting to
publish a server using a Quay image results in an unsupported OCI
registry error. This change enables developers to use Quay.io as a
first-class hosting option for their MCP server images.
## How Has This Been Tested?
<!-- Have you tested this in a real application? Which scenarios were
tested? -->
- **Unit Tests:** Updated `internal/validators/registries/oci_test.go`
to transition Quay.io from a rejected test case to an allowed one.
- **Pattern Matching:** Verified that the allowlist correctly handles
both specific image identifiers and general pattern matching for the
`quay.io` host.
- **Local Validation:** Ran `make check` to ensure no regressions in the
existing OCI validation logic.
## Breaking Changes
<!-- Will users need to update their code or configurations? -->
No. This is an additive change that expands the allowlist of supported
registries. Existing configurations are unaffected.

The implementation follows the existing pattern for OCI registries:
1. Added a `RegistryURLQuay` constant to `pkg/model` for consistency.
2. Hardcoded `quay.io` into the `allowedOCIRegistries` map in the
validator to minimize architectural complexity.
3. Updated all relevant documentation files (`package-types.mdx`,
`generic-server-json.md`, and `official-registry-requirements.md`) to
ensure the source of truth is updated across the project.
4. Validation remains scoped to public images; no private registry
authentication was added for this host.

## Motivation and Context
<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
This resolves
https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/issues/738. There are
two issues with the NuGet.org integration today:
1. Change the `registryBaseUrl` for NuGet to
`https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json`. `https://api.nuget.org` is not
the entry point for our service and is not specific enough.
`https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json` is the value that users put into
their tooling to connect to our public registry (it is installed by
default in .NET client tooling).
2. Use the service index API to get the URL pattern for package READMEs.
- This URL is not guaranteed to be stable. The service index URL
(`registryBaseUrl`) is, however.
Additionally, I polished up the error messages so various error modes
are clearer. When packages are published to NuGet.org, they take 2-5
minutes to become available due to validations we run.
Some possible states that are now handled and described more helpfully
are:
- Version exists, but the package has no README
- The ID exists, but the version does not
- The ID does not exist at all
There are only 3 authors (me, another MSFT person, and a community
member) explicitly setting the old value. The DB migration will fix the
issue. A future publish will fail with the validation error but the
error message is clear.
`registry type and base URL do not match: 'https://api.nuget.org' is not
valid for registry type 'nuget'. Expected:
https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json`
## How Has This Been Tested?
<!-- Have you tested this in a real application? Which scenarios were
tested? -->
- Unit tests, new and existing
- Manual test locally
- Set old data in the DB, `docker compose up`, confirm the migration
updates the specific package
## Breaking Changes
Yes, but minimal impact expected, unless there is a dependency on the
specific `https://api.nuget.org` value downstream. I am not aware of any
such dependency, and the new value is more proper and specific.

This PR reorganizes and extends the existing documentation in
preparation for publishing on https://modelcontextprotocol.io/.
The current plan is for docs to remain in this repo, and be synced to
the `modelcontextprotocol/modelcontextprotocol` whenever necessary
(e.g., accompanying a release of the registry). I have included a script
in
https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/modelcontextprotocol/pull/1725
(`bin/pull-registry-docs.sh`) that can be run manually to perform the
sync.
If we later decide to permanently move the docs to the
`modelcontextprotocol/modelcontextprotocol` repo, that also works.
This PR puts all https://modelcontextprotocol.io/ docs into
`docs/modelcontextprotocol-io/`. Docs outside that subdirectory, such as
`docs/administration/admin-operations.md`, are intended to be accessible
solely via this repo. One major exception is the
`docs/reference/server-json/` subdirectory, which will depend on the
resolution of
https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/modelcontextprotocol/issues/1649.
However, I think we could address that in a follow-up PR.

## Motivation and Context
Microsoft uses `mcr.microsoft.com` to host our public containers. These
are syndicated to Docker Hub but image references use
`mcr.microsoft.com` which is not currently supported by the Official MCP
Registry.
See https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/issues/753.
Microsoft teams want to use MCR-based images for Microsoft MCP servers.
I believe we should be adding ACR support as well, so that our customers
using Azure Container Registry can use the MCP Registry as well.
In short, MCR is used for Microsoft managed containers. ACR is a
solution for Azure customers to host their own containers.
## How Has This Been Tested?
<!-- Have you tested this in a real application? Which scenarios were
tested? -->
Unit tests.
Manual test: local push of a server.json with
`mcr.microsoft.com/azure-sdk/azure-mcp:2.0.0-beta.1` and
`azurearcjumpstart.azurecr.io/hello-arc:latest` in it. The error is now
about missing annotation not unsupported OCI registry.

## Motivation and Context
Docs currently don't have very clear organisation, and don't explain
core flows.
This fixes#89 (although we still might want to push these to
`https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/`), based on the plan there.
One minor change from that plan is that I merged tutorials and guides,
because they ended up basically being duplicates which I thought would
be annoying for us to keep in sync. Additionally in the Diátaxis
framework, tutorials and guides are separated by whether they are
focused on acquisition of skills (e.g. in a learning environment) or
application of skills (e.g. in a work environment). I expect the
registry to be something that will be used occasionally in a work
environment, rather than a fundamental 'learnable' skill so I think it's
reasonable not to have tutorials and fold these into guides.
## How Has This Been Tested?
- Read through all these updated docs
- Unit and integration tests (that previously used examples.md and use
the schema) working
- Ran `npx markdown-link-check .` to check all the links work
## Breaking Changes
Links to old docs will break, but I don't think there are any. All
internal links have been checked and updated.
