Peter Alexander eeee857c29 Revise sessionless MCP SEP for formal proposal
Reframe to argue against sessions as a concept rather than against a
hypothetical opt-in alternative. Add citations for real-world client
session behavior, an ecosystem impact survey, concrete server examples
(Linear/Notion/GitHub/Stripe), and references to SEP-2322 and SEP-2549.
Clarify that explicit handles are a design pattern with no protocol
surface, address request-ID and pagination-cursor re-scoping, and tighten
tone throughout. Remove open questions, follow-on sections, and the
comparison table.

MCP Transports Working Group

Welcome to the MCP Transports Working Group — a collaborative community focused on improving the usability of transports in the Model Context Protocol (MCP), including scalability, reliability, and semantics.

Mission

The Transports Working Group coordinates community stakeholders to:

  • Improve transport usability across MCP implementations
  • Define scalability patterns for connection pooling, load distribution, and resource management
  • Establish reliability standards for error handling, reconnection, and message delivery guarantees
  • Clarify transport semantics for protocol behavior, message ordering, and state management
  • Drive interoperability across platforms and implementations

See the CHARTER for detailed scope and processes.

Communication

  • Primary Channel: MCP Discord → #transports-wg
  • Meetings: Weekly, 60 minutes
    • Meeting agendas posted in Discord ≥48 hours in advance
  • Work Tracking: GitHub Issues and Discussions in this repository
  • Reporting: Regular updates to the broader MCP community

Meetings

Cadence: Weekly Day: Wednesdays at 1:00pm PST Duration: 60 minutes Format: Virtual

Note: See meet.modelcontextprotocol.io for meeting links and calendar.

All meetings include:

  • Published agenda (48h prior)
  • Open attendance for all interested participants

Getting Involved

We welcome contributions from anyone interested in MCP transports! Here is how you can get involved:

  1. Join the community — Connect on the #transports-wg channel in MCP Discord.
  2. Attend meetings — Join our weekly calls (find the next meeting at https://meet.modelcontextprotocol.io/). No approval needed!
  3. Contribute — Open issues to propose ideas or submit PRs for improvements.

Please review our CONTRIBUTING.md guide for detailed guidelines on how to participate.

All participants must abide by the MCP Code of Conduct and adhere to the MCP Antitrust Policy.

See GOVERNANCE.md for current members and governance roles.

Current Focus Areas

Our work focuses on:

  1. Scalability — Connection pooling, load distribution, resource management
  2. Reliability — Error handling, reconnection strategies, message delivery guarantees
  3. Transport Semantics — Protocol behavior, message ordering, state management
