SSEClientTransport.Connect creates one event scanner to read the
endpoint event
and a second scanner to read subsequent messages. Each scanner owns a
buffered
reader, so bytes read ahead by the first scanner are discarded when it
is
abandoned. A message coalesced with the endpoint can therefore disappear
while
the connection remains open.
Reuse the event scanner across the endpoint handshake and the
message-reading
goroutine. This preserves unread bytes without changing the public API.
The regression test exercises Connect and Read with a controlled HTTP
response
body, covering both a message coalesced with the endpoint and a message
arriving
after Connect returns. On unmodified main, the separate-message control
passes
and the coalesced case times out; both pass with the fix.

## Summary
`NewSSEHandler` sessions were advertising `2026-07-28` in
`server/discover` `supportedVersions`. That revision only defines stdio
and Streamable HTTP, not the deprecated HTTP+SSE binding, so
Modern-first clients could negotiate a revision the transport cannot
honour.
## Changes
- Implement `ProtocolVersionSupporter` on `SSEServerTransport` so
`filterSupportedVersions` excludes `>= 2026-07-28` (matching the
streamable transport's version gate pattern).
- In `Server.discover`, only set session `InitializeParams` when the
requested version is actually supported by the transport. Without this,
a discover probe that returns only legacy versions still marked the
session initialized, and the client's fallback `initialize` failed with
`duplicate "initialize" received`.
- Tests: unit coverage for filtered SSE versions, plus an end-to-end
Modern client → SSE fallback-to-initialize path.
Fixes#1112
## Test plan
- [x] `go test ./...`
- [x] `go test ./mcp/ -run
'TestSSE|TestInMemory_E2E_Discover|TestStreamableStateful_AcceptsDiscover|TestStreamableHTTP_E2E_Discover|TestClientConnectDiscover'`

405 Method Not Allowed responses MUST include an Allow header listing
supported methods, per RFC 9110 Section 15.5.6. This fixes issues with
strict HTTP gateways (like Apigee) that treat 405 responses without an
Allow header as malformed, returning 502 Bad Gateway errors.
## Changes
- **SSEHandler**: Add `Allow: GET, POST` header for unsupported methods
- **StreamableHTTPHandler**: Add Allow header for GET-without-session case:
- Stateless mode: `Allow: POST, DELETE` (GET is never valid)
- Stateful mode: `Allow: GET, POST, DELETE` (GET is valid once you have
a session)
- Add tests to verify Allow header presence in all 405 responses
## RFC 9110 Reference
[Section 15.5.6 (405 Method Not
Allowed)](https://httpwg.org/specs/rfc9110.html#status.405):
> The origin server MUST generate an Allow header field in a 405
response containing a list of the target resource's currently supported
methods.
## Testing
All existing tests pass, plus new tests added:
- `TestSSE405AllowHeader` - verifies SSE handler compliance
- `TestStreamable405AllowHeader` - verifies Streamable handler
compliance in both stateful and stateless modes

Provide a way for middleware to get the error from a tool call,
demonstrating that we can add this functionality without making a
breaking change.
Leave getError unexported for now; we can export it (and setError) at
any time.
For #64.
As described in #272, there is really no reason for transports to be
closed structs with constructors, since their state must be established
by a call to Connect. Making them open structs simplifies their APIs,
and means that all transports can be extended in the future: we don't
have to create empty Options structs just for the purpose of future
compatibility.
For now, the related constructors and options structs are simply
deprecated (with go:fix directives where possible). A future CL will
remove them prior to the v1.0.0 release.
For #272
Support stateless streamable sessions by adding a GetSessionID function
to StreamableHTTPOptions. If GetSessionID returns "", the session is
stateless, and no validation is performed. This is implemented by
providing the session a trivial initialization state.
To implement this, some parts of #232 (distributed sessions) are copied
over, since they add an API for creating an already-initialized session.
In total, the following new API is added:
- StreamableHTTPOptions.GetSessionID
- ServerSessionOptions (a new parameter to Server.Connect)
- ServerSessionState
- ClientSessionOptions (a new parameter to Client.Connect, for symmetry)
For #10
Audit all cases where params must not be null, and enforce this using
methodInfo via a new methodFlags bitfield that parameterizes method
requirements. Write extensive conformance tests catching all the
(server-side) crashes that were possible.
We should go further and validate schema against the spec, but that is
more indirect, more complicated, and potentially slower. For now we
adopt this more explicit approach.
Still TODO in a subsequent CL: verify the client side of this with
client conformance tests.
Additionally, improve some error messages that were redundant or leaked
internal implementation details.
Fixes#195
Add an isRequest field to methodInfo, used it to reject non-notification
requests that lack a valid ID. Furthermore, lift this validation to the
transport layer for HTTP server transports, so that we can preemptively
reject bad HTTP requests.
Fixes#194Fixes#197
Export the Event type in preparation for providing user-definable
storage for resumable streams.
Also, move event code to a separate file.
This PR is just renaming and code motion.
When attempting to create an OAuth authentication on top of the SSE
transport I discovered the sseClientConn was using http.DefaultClient
for requests instead of the custom client provided via
SSEClientTransportOptions.
This change stores the HTTP client in the sseClientConn struct and uses
it for all requests. Also adds test to verify the custom client is
properly used.
BREAKING CHANGE
Change the API for adding tools, prompts, resources and resource
templates to a server.
The ServerXXX types are gone along with the plural Add methods
(AddTools, AddPrompts etc.)
Instead there are single Add methods (AddTool, AddPrompt).
In addition, instead of NewServerTool, there is AddTool[In, Out].
Fixes#73.
After some experience with the flattened version of Content, we see that
it can easily lead to incorrect usage and is a harder API to read.
Therefore, this CL changes back to a design similar to what we had prior
to https://go.dev/cl/672415, though opting to promote content
unmarshalling to the protocol types that use it, which leads to an
overall simpler api.
* mcp: move to 2025-06-18 schema
Add types and fields for the latest MCP schema.
The main challenge here was dealing with the presence of _meta fields
on many types, like Tool, Prompt and Resource.
- Distinguish between the _meta field of a request's params, which
includes a progress token, from the _meta field on other types,
which is simply a map.
- Redefine GetMeta to return a pointer to the map. We wanted to avoid
that, but I don't see a clean way to do so. An alternative would be
to have GetMeta return a map, and SetMeta to set it.
- Provide GetProgressToken for requests only (not notifications or other
types).
- Still to do: deal with the meta and annotation fields of ContentBlock,
which are currently duplicated for Resource and ResourceContents.
* Meta and progress token redesign
Allow customizing the http.Client used for HTTP MCP client transports,
by adding client options structs.

- A StreamableHTTPHandler for serving sessions.
- A StreamableHTTPServerTransport that supports session resumption.
- A minimal StreamableHTTPClientTransport.
Additionally, include the following minor changes:
- Refactor SSE event reading to use an iterator.
- Start to to aliases for JSON-RPC types (incomplete)
- Fix handling for null tool arguments (again)
Still to do:
- The streamable client does not support retry/resumption, or the
side-channel GET requests.
- Support configurable session and event retention (garbage collection).
- Expose the HTTP client used for HTTP requests (for auth).

CallToolParams.Arguments is any.
Clients can send whatever they want.
Tool authors who create their own ToolHandler (bypassing NewTool)
will receive the arguments as a map[string]any which has been
validated against the input schema.
Tool authors who call NewTool can choose the type that the arguments
unmarshal into.
There is no double-unmarshaling and no downcasting.
There is no way for tool authors to avoid the unmarshal, and no way to
avoid the validation unless the omit an input schema, which is probably
bad for LLMs. If tool authors want this optimization, we can provide
it later.

Make Tool APIs future-proof by pushing generics into CallToolParams, and
using CallToolParams throughout. This has several advantages:
- We no longer need the awkward CallToolOptions type, which is almost
but not quite like CallToolParams.
- NewTool no longer needs to define its own handler type: it accepts a
ToolHandler[TArgs]. This also means its signature is future-proof.
Additionally, provide a `CallTool` helper (the analog of NewTool) to
serve as a more strongly typed variant of `ClientSession.CallTool`.
