Copilot review (#2287), two findings — and taken together they said the marker
was the wrong mechanism, so this removes it rather than patching it again:
- A transient failure in our CIMD preflight recorded no marker, so a *successful*
SDK fallback discovery that advertised CIMD was still stored as `dcr`.
- `existing` and `existingKind` could describe different registrations, because
`clientInformation()` answers preregistered-first while `clientRegistrationKind()`
prefers the issuer's dynamic slot.
SDK v2 `auth()` persists the authorization-server metadata via
`saveDiscoveryState` *before* it reads or writes client information, and it takes
its URL-based-client-ID branch — rather than `registerClient` — exactly when that
metadata advertises `client_id_metadata_document_supported` and a
`clientMetadataUrl` is configured. So the branch is not inferred at all now: it is
read back from the state the SDK itself just wrote.
`resolveSdkRegistrationKind` becomes two cases. A save for an issuer that already
has a registration under this `client_id` is a back-stamp, answered by that
registration's recorded kind — so an existing DCR on the metadata URL stays
`dcr`. A save for an issuer with none is a new registration, answered by the
discovery state, guarded on the metadata describing that same issuer.
This drops `cimdClientMetadataUrl` and its storage accessors entirely, and
restores `ensureCimdClientRegistration` to a plain issuer-bound pre-registration.
Invalid-client recovery, second-issuer CIMD, second-issuer DCR minting the
metadata URL, and preflight failure are all consequences of the two cases rather
than separate mechanisms.

Copilot review (#2287): the marker was written as soon as the AS advertised
`client_id_metadata_document_supported`, before checking what registration
already existed. RFC 7591 §3.2 leaves a dynamically issued `client_id` opaque,
so an existing DCR may carry the configured metadata URL — and marking the
issuer then relabels that real dynamic registration as CIMD on the SDK's next
issuer stamp.
The marker now records both facts it is read for: that this AS accepts the URL
as a `client_id`, *and* that the registration standing for it got there through
CIMD. It is written where this helper establishes the registration itself,
reaffirmed for one already recorded as `cimd` under that exact URL, and withdrawn
otherwise — which also covers a static client and an AS that has stopped
advertising CIMD.
Covered at both levels: a mocked case asserting the marker is withdrawn for an
existing DCR on the same URL, and an end-to-end real-storage case asserting such
a registration is still `dcr` after the SDK issuer-stamps it.

Copilot review (#2287), three findings:
1. **invalid-client recovery lost the provenance.** SDK v2 `auth()` answers
`invalid_client` / `unauthorized_client` with `invalidateCredentials("client")`
and an immediate retry; our clear drops the registration *and* its kind, so
the retry's URL-based client-ID save landed with nothing recorded and was
stored as `dcr`. Provenance now lives in `cimdClientMetadataUrl`, an
issuer-keyed marker on the issuer slot that records a property of the AS
rather than a credential — `clearClientInformation` deliberately leaves it
alone. `ensureCimdClientRegistration` writes it, and withdraws it when the AS
stops advertising CIMD, on every connect.
2. **Discovery became a hard network dependency.** Moving the existing-client
check after discovery meant a well-known outage could fail a reconnect the SDK
would have served from its persisted discovery state. Reuse
`provider.discoveryState()` first, and treat a discovery failure as "skip
pre-registration" rather than an error — this helper is an optimization over
what `auth()` does for itself.
3. **Dropped an unjustified double cast** in the test fetch helper; the async
signature is directly assignable to `typeof fetch`.

Copilot review (#2287): the active-issuer fallback added last round could copy
issuer A's CIMD provenance onto a real dynamic registration for issuer B, since
RFC 7591 §3.2 permits B to mint the same opaque URL as its `client_id`.
Fix it at the source rather than in the resolver. `ensureCimdClientRegistration`
now runs discovery first and records the registration against the issuer it just
discovered, having confirmed *that* AS advertises
`client_id_metadata_document_supported`. Its "already registered?" check moves
after discovery and is keyed by that issuer — read ctx-less it resolved through
the active issuer and early-returned for every later one, which is what forced
the cross-issuer fallback in the first place.
`resolveSdkRegistrationKind` is therefore issuer-scoped again, with no fallback.
A second AS behind one resource now gets its own determination: CIMD when it
advertises CIMD, `dcr` otherwise — including when it mints the metadata URL as
its own `client_id`.
The cost is a discovery round trip per connect attempt rather than only the
first; noted at the call site.

When RFC 9728 protected-resource metadata names no authorization server, the
MCP server URL stands in as one. `getAuthorizationServerUrl` built that with
`new URL("/", serverUrl)`, which discards the path — exactly the part discovery
needs when the server is not hosted at the domain root. The SDK's
`buildDiscoveryUrls` derives the path-scoped well-known locations from that
pathname, so an origin-only value could only ever probe the domain root, which
404s for a server like `https://example.com/mod/minilesson/mcp.php`.
Keep the path (and strip query/fragment, which an RFC 8414 issuer never
carries). A straight swap would regress the case the origin-only value did
serve — a server that merely lives under a path while publishing its metadata
at the root — so the URL becomes the first of two candidates:
`getAuthorizationServerUrlCandidates` yields the path-scoped form then the bare
origin, and `discoverAuthorizationServerMetadataForServer` walks them, treating
a candidate's failure as non-fatal while another remains and rethrowing the
first error only when all of them fail.
`discoverScopes` and the CIMD pre-registration probe both go through the walk.

Two findings from review:
- `ensureCimdClientRegistration` ran protected-resource discovery on the
global fetch while its AS-metadata leg used the configured one. On web
that is `createRemoteFetch`, which proxies through the backend to sidestep
CORS — so the discovery this PR routes to a challenge-advertised URL would
fail in the browser, be swallowed by the catch, and leave CIMD probing the
wrong authorization server. Forward `params.fetchFn`, and assert in the
test that nothing reaches the global.
- `oauth.resourceMetadataPath` accepted `//other-host/doc`. Resolved against
the request base that re-points the origin in the advertised
`resource_metadata` while Express still registers the route locally, so the
server would advertise a document it does not serve. `/\\host` does the
same, since the URL parser folds a backslash into a slash for special
schemes — a leading-slash check misses both. Validate origin-relativity
with a shared predicate, used by the JSON-config validator and again at
server setup for a programmatically built ServerConfig.

An RFC 9728 `WWW-Authenticate: Bearer resource_metadata="…"` challenge was
parsed and then dropped by the normalized `AuthChallenge`, so every
challenge-driven `mcpAuth()` call ran discovery without it and probed
locations derived from the MCP server URL instead. OAuth failed outright
against any server whose metadata document lives off the well-known path.
The SDK handles this correctly inside its own transports, but the Inspector
never reaches that path — it intercepts the 401 and drives `auth()` itself
to capture the authorization URL and run the step-up scope union.
Carry the advertised URL on `AuthChallenge` as a string (it crosses the web
client's remote-backend boundary as JSON), convert it at the OAuth boundary,
and pass it to the standard challenge leg, the forced step-up leg, and CIMD
pre-registration — which runs before `auth()` and did its own discovery. A
malformed value is ignored rather than surfaced, matching the SDK's parser.
The callback leg needs nothing: SDK `auth()` persists the URL in its
discovery state.
Adds an `oauth.resourceMetadataPath` test-server mode that moves the
document off the well-known path entirely, so the integration test proves
discovery genuinely fails without the fix.

- Run Prettier on the 60 core/ files this PR touched — the deterministic
import rewrite had collapsed multi-line imports and left throws unwrapped;
core/ is in no format gate so it slipped past CI. Now Prettier-clean.
- Default-path output-schema violation now throws
ProtocolError(ProtocolErrorCode.InvalidParams, …) instead of a bare Error,
matching the prior v1 contract (SDK threw a typed McpError with a code) so
downstream `instanceof`/`.code` branching keeps working.
- Document the "assumes serial construction" invariant on pollTaskToolCall's
progress-subscription revival (the `_progressHandlers` new-key heuristic).

Migrate all three clients + core + test-servers from
@modelcontextprotocol/sdk@1.29 to SDK v2 (2.0.0-beta.4), keeping behavior
identical against legacy (2025-11-25) servers. Foundation for the SDK V2 +
New Spec stack.
Packages
- Split @modelcontextprotocol/sdk -> @modelcontextprotocol/client (Client,
transports, OAuth, error taxonomy, protocol types) + core (Zod schemas);
stdio -> client/stdio, Ajv -> client/validators/ajv. Test-servers ->
@modelcontextprotocol/server (+ server-legacy/sse). Deterministic import
rewrite (schemas -> core, everything else -> client); the codemod misroutes
client code to /server so it was not used for path routing.
- new Client(..., { versionNegotiation: { mode: 'legacy' } }) — nothing
2026-era goes on the wire.
Runtime (core/mcp/inspectorClient.ts)
- Error taxonomy: McpError -> ProtocolError, ErrorCode -> ProtocolErrorCode;
RequestTimeout -> SdkError/SdkErrorCode.
- Handlers take method strings; task methods (tasks/*, notifications/tasks/*)
use the 3-arg custom form (excluded from v2's spec-method set).
- Legacy tasks kept working (per project requirement): requestor tasks re-
implemented over raw client.request + explicit deprecated schemas;
experimental.tasks.callToolStream replaced by a local pollTaskToolCall
async generator (with _progressHandlers revival so task-execution progress
still reaches the caller). Receiver (server-initiated) tasks: the v2 Client
validates a sampling/elicit handler result and rejects the legacy { task }
response with -32602 — installReceiverTaskResponseBypass swaps the wrapped
entry in the private _requestHandlers map for the task-augmented branch so
{ task } reaches the wire (fixes server-initiated sampling-via-task).
- Pagination: list verbs use raw client.request({method}, List*ResultSchema)
for single-page behavior (v2's client.listX() auto-aggregate all pages).
Web / auth / apps
- Rename local JsonSchemaType -> InspectorFormSchema + add toFormSchema()
structural narrowing at the SDK-schema -> form boundary.
- ext-apps still peers on SDK v1: one compat boundary with documented casts
(remove when ext-apps#702 lands a v2 peer).
- OAuth provider saveClientInformation reconciled with v2's
OAuthClientInformationContext; InvalidClientMetadataError re-homed as a
local class (server-legacy/auth is not browser-safe).
- vitest.shared.mts dedupes @modelcontextprotocol/client+core to one copy so
vi.mock intercepts the SUT's import.
Accepted v2 behavior changes (per #1624 / spec §9.2): unknown-tool call
rejects with -32602; cancellation is stream-abort (no guaranteed
notifications/cancelled frame); output-schema strictness restored via the
Inspector's own Ajv check on the default path.
npm run ci green: validate (web 3087 / cli 212 / tui 274 / launcher 5),
coverage (>=90 per-file, all clients), smoke (launcher/cli/web), storybook
(410).

* refactor(web): update OAuth E2E tests to use new authentication method
- Replaced `runGuidedAuth` with `authenticate` in the InspectorClient OAuth end-to-end tests to support quick authentication with CIMD pre-registration.
- Updated comments to reflect the change in authentication method and its support for HTTP test metadata URLs.
- Ensured that the tests continue to validate the expected authorization URL after the change.
Additionally, imported `ensureCimdClientRegistration` in the OAuthManager to streamline client registration during the authentication process.
* Guided-auth removal, OAuth smoke testing, and TUI/CLI support
* Added CLI OAuth runner flags tests
* Added clarifying comment on port 0 binding
* README notes on TUI oauth callback port, prettier fixes for CLI tests
* CIMD validation uses inline like EMA IdP
* Fixed TUI test failures from merge
* test: bring 5 OAuth files over the 90 per-file coverage gate
The guided-auth-removal work added/touched several files that fell below
the repo's >=90 per-file coverage gate (npm run coverage). CI doesn't run
the gate (it's local-only), so validate + test:integration passed while
these gaps slipped through. Bring them all back over the line:
- core/auth/node/runner-oauth-callback.ts: test bad-URL/non-http-scheme
throws, no-port->80 default, and IPv6 hostname bracketing. Annotate the
provably-dead guards (empty host, out-of-range port, String(err)
fallback, pathname "/" fallback) -- all rejected by new URL() upstream --
with justified v8 ignore comments instead of lowering the gate.
- core/auth/cimd.ts: test the AS-doesn't-support-CIMD early return.
- core/react/useClientSettingsDraft.ts: test the functional-updater path,
the stale-onChange-after-close prev===null guard, and the
timer-fires-after-close value===null guard.
- ClientSettingsForm.tsx: test the CIMD checkbox toggle and CIMD URL clear.
- clients/tui/src/utils/oauthDisplay.ts: test static/dcr registration
kinds, the expired IdP session, and the configured-scope/empty-scope
branches of formatScopes.
npm run coverage now passes (exit 0) across web, cli, tui, launcher.
