Copilot review round 2: both expressions omitted Vitest's `max(…, 1)`, so
as written they described zero workers on a one-core runner. Now
`max(availableParallelism() - 1, 1)` for the forks pool and
`max(min(12, availableParallelism() - 1), 1)` for the browser pool, and the
browser pool's single-worker condition names all three of its terms
(headless, file parallelism, provider support).

Copilot review round 1: "every project inherits availableParallelism() - 1"
overstated the scope. The five forks-pool projects do; web's storybook
project runs the browser pool, whose default is min(12, availableParallelism()
- 1) — the same 7 on this machine, but a different expression, capped on
larger machines and 1 unless headless — and none of the arms measured it. A
maxWorkers set on that project would still apply (getThreadsCount reads it
first), so it is not exempt from the decision, only unmeasured; both files
now say so.

No Vitest project sets `maxWorkers`, so every one inherits Vitest's
`availableParallelism() - 1` (7 on the team's M3). #2336 asked whether that
number should be stated or capped. Measured at the leased baseline (#2339),
interleaved default / --maxWorkers=4 / default, three rounds each: a cap of 4
costs +14% wall on the web unit suite and +39% on coverage:web, saves 18-22%
CPU, and prevents zero failures (0 of 18 runs either way). Against a sibling
session's concurrent unit run it is a small politeness trade with no
throughput gain; the only failures seen were one test's 5s inner waitFor at
14 workers, which is a site to fix rather than a reason to cap.
So the default is kept, as a chosen value: the reasoning and the numbers sit
beside TIMEOUTS in vitest.shared.mts, and AGENTS.md carries the rule so a
reviewer can cite it against a future per-project cap. CI is unaffected.

Round 8 of the review asked for an AST. That was the right diagnosis of the
wrong problem: the question was never which parser to use, it was why a
test-timeout guard was parsing JavaScript at all.
It got there one reasonable step at a time. The guard enforces two rules no
Vitest config can report — a per-test `retry`, and Testing Library's
`asyncUtilTimeout` — so it read them out of source text, and the review found a
new valid spelling it missed in five consecutive rounds: a trailing comment,
nested parens in `it.each([makeCase()])`, a member-access prefix, the shorthand
`{ retry }`, an aliased import, a non-literal title. Each fix was correct and
each made it more parser-shaped, until it carried eight helpers doing quote
tracking and bracket balancing.
Both rules are observable at runtime, exactly:
- `vitest.setup.shared.mts` is loaded by all six projects and reads
`ctx.task.retry` — the value Vitest resolved for the test. That covers
strictly more than the scan did: a per-test option, a `describe` option
inherited by children, a project-level setting, and a `--retry` flag typed at
a command line, which the scan could never see since it only read npm scripts.
- `clients/web/src/test/asyncUtilTimeout.test.ts` asserts
`getConfig().asyncUtilTimeout`, the value this project's own waitFors read.
Neither has a spelling to anticipate, so neither can be outrun by a new one.
Both were observed firing before being trusted.
The guard keeps only what it can answer by asking Vitest: resolved budgets,
project-level retry, config discovery, and that each project still loads the
setup file — the one thing about the runtime assertion a config CAN report.
868 lines to 361, every scanner helper gone, and 33 of 48 unit tests deleted
because they pinned edge cases of a thing that no longer exists.
storybookSetup.ts goes with it. At the library's own value its configure() call
was a no-op, and the assertion is what pins the number.
AGENTS.md gains the general rule: a rule about what the code DOES is asserted at
runtime, not read out of the source — reach for a verify:* guard when the
question is about configuration, which a tool can be asked to resolve.

Three of the six Vitest projects ran on Vitest's own testTimeout: 5000 and
five on its hookTimeout/teardownTimeout: 10000, and all 788 Testing Library
waits in the web unit project ran on asyncUtilTimeout: 1000. None of those
numbers was chosen here, and all of them were sized for an idle machine rather
than for three or four concurrent worktree sessions each running a full
local:gate on eight cores. #2292, #2278, #2250, #1942 and #1742 were each that
class, diagnosed one site at a time.
This is the complement of #1596, not a retreat from it: every fix that issue
produced stands, and no race is hidden here. What changes is that a correct,
deterministic test is no longer cut off by a budget nobody picked.
- vitest.shared.mts exports frozen TIMEOUTS / INTEGRATION_TIMEOUTS; all six
projects spread one of them, clients/launcher importing the shared module for
the first time to do so.
- Both web projects configure Testing Library's asyncUtilTimeout. The storybook
one needs its own setup file, deliberately outside .storybook/ and free of
setProjectAnnotations so the automatic preview-annotation provisioning
(#1898) is untouched.
- 28 per-suite restatements of the integration project's own budget are gone,
so raising the shared value now moves every site under it. The handful that
genuinely differ — cross-process lock contention, a full OAuth round trip —
keep their budget as a named constant that says why.
- AppRenderer's waitFor no longer asks for exactly its enclosing budget, which
it could never win (#2292's shape); cli's e2e child timer drops below the
project budget so the bound carrying the diagnostic is the one that fires.
- The transition auto-settle's slack term is named RAF_SLACK_MS and raised;
the term derived from HEADER_ANIM_MS is untouched. The two answer to
different things and must not be scaled as one number.
- The 19 Playwright budgets scattered across three web smokes become four
named constants in scripts/lib/browser-timeouts.mjs.
scripts/verify-test-timeouts.mjs resolves each project through Vitest itself
and asserts the budgets, the asyncUtilTimeout sites, and that retry stays
unset. It was observed red against the pre-change config: unit/tui/launcher at
testTimeout 5000, five projects at hookTimeout 10000, both asyncUtilTimeout
sites unmet.

**Reads were bounded by entry count but not by total bytes.** A manifest can
sit at exactly 512 entries and declare a gigabyte each, so round 9's cap
still let a server dictate unbounded bandwidth and time after
`size-limit-exceeded` had already been reported. `boundedManifest` caps on
both interoperability limits now.
Sizes are summed exactly as `totalSkillBytes` sums them, so the bound and the
finding that reports the overage cannot disagree about the total. A read is
skipped only when the running total would CROSS the limit, so a conforming
skill — at most 16 MiB by definition — is never truncated; there is a test
for that, because a bound that protected against a hostile server by giving a
wrong answer about a good one would be a poor trade. The self-file fallback
still applies, so the mandatory frontmatter check survives either cap.
**The `vitest.shared.mts` pin rationale had gone stale.** It said `yaml` is
reached only through `test-servers/src`, which this PR made untrue by
importing it from `core/mcp/skillFile.ts`. That comment is what a future
dependency-placement change would read before removing or reclassifying the
pin, so it now names the `core/` path and the bundler `external` lists that
follow from it.

Both findings are my own comments contradicting each other, in the same file.
- The no-pin example list still named `open` and `zod`, which the array right
below it now pins. It names `ajv`, `commander` and `undici` instead, and says
what the criterion actually is: absence is a statement about the installed
tree, not about the manifests.
- The consolidated group is described as root-OWNED aliases rather than
`core/`'s runtime dependencies, since `@hono/node-server` is reached from web
client code alone and is here for the resolution reason, not because `core/`
imports it.
Comments only. npm run local:gate passes.
Signed-off-by: cliffhall <cliff@futurescale.com>
Two suppressed comments, both accurate.
- Pin zod, zod/v4 and open to the root in vitest.shared.mts, and add matching
paths to the three clients/web tsconfigs. The claim they replace — that these
resolve unambiguously by walk-up — was wrong: both still sit at the top level
of clients/web/node_modules as transitive copies (zod under
eslint-plugin-react-hooks, open under Storybook), so an unpinned bare import
from a web test resolved the client copy while core/ and the SDK packages
resolved the root's. For open that is only wasteful; for zod it is a schema
built by one copy and an instanceof check made by the other across the whole
@modelcontextprotocol/* surface. zod is deduped as well, and zod/v4 gets its
own entry because first-party code imports both specifiers and pinning one
would split the package rather than collapse it.
- Update the consumer comments that #2195 falsified. clients/web/vite.config.ts
(three places) and server/start-vite-dev-server.ts all still said the shared
aliases resolve pino/hono and friends from clients/web/node_modules; they now
state the split — react and react-dom from the client install, everything
root-declared from the repo root.
- local-dev skill: replace the wrong 'resolves unambiguously' list with the
distinction that actually matters. Deleting a declaration is not the same as
the package resolving from the root, because chokidar, zod, open and react
all sit in a client install transitively; check the install, not the manifest.
ajv, commander and undici carry no pin because no client install has a copy.
npm run local:gate passes from a cold tsc build.
Signed-off-by: cliffhall <cliff@futurescale.com>
- Complete the bundler external lists against the AGENTS.md invariant rather
than against today's reachability: chokidar, hono and react to clients/cli,
chokidar and hono to clients/tui, react to the web runner. Every root-declared
package core/ imports at runtime is now named in all three, so a new import in
core/ cannot silently inline one.
- AGENTS.md: split the single over-broad bullet in two. commander, open,
@hono/node-server, vite and @vitejs/plugin-react are root dependencies reached
only from client code, so they are not part of the core/ set and need naming
only in the external list of the client that imports them. Give the
vitest.shared.mts pins their own rule, stating the react/react-dom exception
instead of implying every root-owned package is aliased to the root.
- vitest.shared.mts: the umbrella comment now says root-OWNED rather than root
runtime dependency — express is test-only and lives in the root
devDependencies — and notes that the list is deliberately not the complete
root set, since a package that resolves unambiguously needs no pin.
- local-dev skill: document why react/react-dom stay client-pinned, which the
previous text contradicted.
npm run local:gate and npm run verify:bundle-externals pass.
Signed-off-by: cliffhall <cliff@futurescale.com>
Every runtime dependency core/ imports is now declared once, in the repo-root
package.json, and nowhere else. Deleting the client-side copies does not merely
align them: a package installs only into an install root that declares it, so
with no second declaration a second copy cannot be created at all — the failure
class #1896 was opened for and #1965/#2029 built verify:dep-lockstep to detect.
- clients/{web,cli,tui,launcher}: dropped ajv, atomically, chokidar, commander,
open, pino, zod, @napi-rs/keyring, hono, @hono/node-server and react, as each
applied. clients/cli and clients/launcher now declare no runtime dependencies.
- Root hono floor raised ^4.12.18 -> ^4.13.1, keeping the higher of the two
ranges that were in the tree rather than silently lowering web's.
- tsup external lists: added ajv and zod to all three bundles, plus atomically
and open (cli) and atomically (tui). tsup externalizes only what the nearest
manifest declares, so a package that moves to the root is inlined unless it is
named explicitly.
- vitest.shared.mts: repointed the pino, hono, @hono/node-server, atomically,
chokidar and @napi-rs/keyring pins from <client>/node_modules to the repo
root, joining express, yaml and proper-lockfile. Left behind they would
resolve to a directory that no longer exists, or to a transitive copy an
unrelated dependency dragged in. react and react-dom stay client-pinned so
the pair stays version-matched within an install.
- Docs: AGENTS.md dependency placement, the root README and the local-dev skill
describe the consolidated layout.
verify:dep-lockstep candidate set: 4 -> 2 (hono and pino fell out; only
@standard-schema/spec and zod still reach one tsc program from two installs).
npm run local:gate and npm run pack:verify both pass.
Signed-off-by: cliffhall <cliff@futurescale.com>
- Create the storage directory before locking. `writeStoreFile` creates it,
but from inside the locked section — so on a fresh install, where
`~/.mcp-inspector` does not exist, proper-lockfile failed ENOENT and every
*first* save degraded to an unlocked write with a warning. That is the save
most likely to be racing another (two Inspectors started together both
reach it), so the lock was absent from precisely the interleaving it exists
to close.
- `anythingToMigrate` no longer reads every `readdir` failure as "nothing to
migrate". Only ENOENT/ENOTDIR proves the fresh-install case; a directory
that denies listing can still permit access to the known `secrets.json`,
and returning false there selected the keychain and left those secrets
invisible with nothing said. Other errors fall through to the under-lock
checks, which is what happened before the fast path existed.
- Pin `proper-lockfile` to the repo-root install in `vitest.shared.mts`,
beside express and yaml: it is reached only through root-owned `core/`.
Resolution already finds the root copy since no client declares it; the pin
is what stops that depending on it never arriving as some client's
transitive dependency, which would give a test two copies of a module whose
whole job is one registry of held locks.
- Make the cross-process test prove `mutate` takes the lock. The previous one
asserted only that both secrets survived, which the optimistic verify
delivers with the lock removed entirely. It now asserts the parent's `set`
has *not* settled while a child holds the lock — an observation only a real
lock produces. Verified by removing `withSecretFileLock` from `mutate`:
three tests fail, where none did before.
The degrade test's "lock cannot be created" case is now a path whose parent
is a *file* rather than a missing directory, since a missing directory is no
longer that case. It also fails identically for root, so it cannot pass
locally and flake in a container.

Copilot review round 2, four findings, all factual errors in the docs added by
the previous commit:
- `yaml` is in the root `dependencies`, not `devDependencies`, and its only
importer is `test-servers/src/load-config.ts` — not `core/` or the root
tooling, as the `vitest.shared.mts` comment claimed.
- The rule as written told a reader to put anything reached through root-owned
code — `core/` included — in `devDependencies`. That is wrong and would break
the published package silently: the client builds externalize npm packages, so
a published install resolves them from the root manifest, where
devDependencies are absent. Placement (which manifest) and classification
(which section) are now stated as separate questions, the second following
from who consumes the package at runtime.
`yaml`'s runtime classification is left alone and called out instead: moving it
changes what ships, which is not a docs change.

The four v2 SDK packages (`client`, `core`, `server`, `server-legacy`) plus
`ext-apps` were declared in the root manifest *and* again in clients/web, cli,
and tui, so each client installed its own copy. Node resolution walks up and the
root install is on every client's chain — and the root manifest is already the
documented source of truth for what ships — so the per-client entries were
duplicates of a decision made at the root, and they had already drifted: before
this change the tree carried ext-apps 1.7.4 at the root and 1.7.5 under
clients/web, dragging in two copies of the v1 `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk`
(1.29.0 and 1.30.0) through ext-apps' peer dependency.
Nothing imports the v1 SDK; it is not in any manifest of ours, only a peer of
ext-apps, so consolidating ext-apps is the only lever over it. After a clean
install there is now exactly one copy of each, at the root. `npm update` then
moves ext-apps to 1.7.5 and its SDK peer to 1.30.0, whose widened
`@hono/node-server` range (`^1.19.9 || ^2.0.5`) also drops a nested duplicate of
that package.
`express` needed a real home to make this work. `test-servers/src` imports it,
but no manifest declared it: it was reaching `clients/cli/node_modules` only as
a peer of `express-rate-limit` under `@modelcontextprotocol/server-legacy`, so
removing that entry took express with it and every cli test that spawns a test
server failed to resolve it. It is now a root devDependency — test-servers is
root-owned code with no manifest of its own — and `vitest.shared.mts` resolves
it from the root, joining `yaml`, which was already the precedent for exactly
this case. The clients/web duplicate is dropped; its only reference is a
type-only import covered by `@types/express`.

* chore: close a batch of quality-gate & tidy gaps (#1785#1787#1789#1790#1767)
Bundles five small, related tidy/gate items into one PR:
- #1785: delete the dead src/types/navigation.ts InspectorTab (0 importers;
duplicated/drifted from utils/inspectorTabs InspectorTabId). src/types/
now holds only ambient .d.ts stubs.
- #1787: add src/hooks/** to the web coverage `include` (it was silently
outside the ≥90 gate) and add tests for the two untested hooks,
useServerJsonImport and useImportClientConfig, bringing every hook to
≥90 on lines/statements/functions/branches.
- #1789: widen clients/{cli,tui,launcher} format/format:check to their
top-level configs; add root format:shared / format:check:shared covering
test-servers/src/**, vitest.shared.mts, and the repo-root eslint.config.js.
- #1790: pin prettier to an exact version (3.8.4, dropping the ^3.8.1
caret) in all five package.json files so the format gate's verdict can't
shift with an in-range patch bump; lockfiles synced.
- #1767: its root-file format+lint gap is closed here (format:shared +
a new lint:shared via a second files block in the root eslint.config.js;
web/server/ was already gated in #1788). Its larger cli/tui __tests__
typecheck piece (76 type errors) is split out to #1791.
Prettier-normalized the newly-covered files (pure formatting). No runtime
behavior change. `npm run ci` green.

launcher format to include scripts/; reformat the 3 .storybook files
(were non-conforming under the pinned prettier 3.8.4). Audited all 885
tracked source files — now fully prettier-clean.
- Export VALIDATE_DEBOUNCE_MS / COLLAPSE_DELAY_MS / HIGHLIGHT_DURATION_MS
from useServerJsonImport and use them in the test instead of hardcoded
300/1000/250 (so a tuned constant can't silently desync the test).

* chore: handle PR #1792 round-3 follow-ups in-place (format-coverage guard, uniform globs, theme gate)
Rather than defer these to tickets, fold them into this PR:
- Obs 2: widen every client + root format glob to a uniform
*.{ts,tsx,mts,cts,js,jsx,mjs,cjs} so a future .mts/.cjs/.tsx top-level
file can't silently slip the gate.
- Obs 1: add scripts/verify-format-coverage.mjs (wired into `validate`) —
it parses the format:check globs out of every package.json, enumerates
all tracked source files, and fails listing any not covered by a glob.
The durable, standing version of #1789's one-shot audit; negative-tested.
- Obs 3: bring src/theme/** under the coverage gate (21/23 files were
already ≥90 transitively; add Paper.test.tsx for the one laggard,
Paper.ts). src/App.tsx (~4.5k lines, ~42% branches) is converted from a
silent omission into an explicit, documented exclusion (comment on the
coverage `include` + AGENTS.md) — gating it is a dedicated effort, not a
whitelist tweak.
npm run ci green (the new guard reports 885/885 tracked source files gated).

* chore: address PR #1792 round-4 findings (guard hardening, docs, exclusion list)
- Harden verify-format-coverage: only harvest format:check globs from
scripts transitively reachable from `validate` (via npm run refs), so an
unwired/renamed format:check no longer counts as coverage. Negative-tested
— renaming clients/web format:check to an unreferenced name now fails the
guard (627 files flagged) instead of passing.
- Name src/main.tsx and src/index.ts (browser + bin bootstraps) alongside
src/App.tsx in the coverage-include comment and AGENTS.md, so the
documented exclusion list is complete rather than claiming App.tsx is the
only one.
- Doc sync: document verify:format-coverage (AGENTS.md + README script table
+ scripts/ layout line), fix the `validate` ordering (verify:format-
coverage now runs before validate:core) in AGENTS.md and README, and
update the quoted globs to the uniform *.{ts,tsx,mts,cts,js,jsx,mjs,cjs} /
test-servers *.{ts,tsx,mts,cts}.
npm run ci green.

* chore: address PR #1792 round-5 findings (airtight guard + doc/config sync)
- verify-format-coverage: assert the root `validate` chain invokes each
client's `validate` (cd <dir> && npm run validate), closing the last
reachability edge — a client dropped from the root chain now fails the
guard even though its own globs still exist. Negative-tested.
- eslint.config.js: widen the shared `files` block to
test-servers/src/**/*.{ts,tsx,mts,cts} to match the widened lint:shared
glob, so a future .mts/.cts there is lint-gated, not just prettier-gated.
- AGENTS.md: scope the "uniform extension set" claim to client globs
(core stays {ts,tsx}, shared {ts,tsx,mts,cts}), with verify:format-coverage
as the backstop — removing the self-contradiction with the line below.

Migrate all three clients + core + test-servers from
@modelcontextprotocol/sdk@1.29 to SDK v2 (2.0.0-beta.4), keeping behavior
identical against legacy (2025-11-25) servers. Foundation for the SDK V2 +
New Spec stack.
Packages
- Split @modelcontextprotocol/sdk -> @modelcontextprotocol/client (Client,
transports, OAuth, error taxonomy, protocol types) + core (Zod schemas);
stdio -> client/stdio, Ajv -> client/validators/ajv. Test-servers ->
@modelcontextprotocol/server (+ server-legacy/sse). Deterministic import
rewrite (schemas -> core, everything else -> client); the codemod misroutes
client code to /server so it was not used for path routing.
- new Client(..., { versionNegotiation: { mode: 'legacy' } }) — nothing
2026-era goes on the wire.
Runtime (core/mcp/inspectorClient.ts)
- Error taxonomy: McpError -> ProtocolError, ErrorCode -> ProtocolErrorCode;
RequestTimeout -> SdkError/SdkErrorCode.
- Handlers take method strings; task methods (tasks/*, notifications/tasks/*)
use the 3-arg custom form (excluded from v2's spec-method set).
- Legacy tasks kept working (per project requirement): requestor tasks re-
implemented over raw client.request + explicit deprecated schemas;
experimental.tasks.callToolStream replaced by a local pollTaskToolCall
async generator (with _progressHandlers revival so task-execution progress
still reaches the caller). Receiver (server-initiated) tasks: the v2 Client
validates a sampling/elicit handler result and rejects the legacy { task }
response with -32602 — installReceiverTaskResponseBypass swaps the wrapped
entry in the private _requestHandlers map for the task-augmented branch so
{ task } reaches the wire (fixes server-initiated sampling-via-task).
- Pagination: list verbs use raw client.request({method}, List*ResultSchema)
for single-page behavior (v2's client.listX() auto-aggregate all pages).
Web / auth / apps
- Rename local JsonSchemaType -> InspectorFormSchema + add toFormSchema()
structural narrowing at the SDK-schema -> form boundary.
- ext-apps still peers on SDK v1: one compat boundary with documented casts
(remove when ext-apps#702 lands a v2 peer).
- OAuth provider saveClientInformation reconciled with v2's
OAuthClientInformationContext; InvalidClientMetadataError re-homed as a
local class (server-legacy/auth is not browser-safe).
- vitest.shared.mts dedupes @modelcontextprotocol/client+core to one copy so
vi.mock intercepts the SUT's import.
Accepted v2 behavior changes (per #1624 / spec §9.2): unknown-tool call
rejects with -32602; cancellation is stream-abort (no guaranteed
notifications/cancelled frame); output-schema strictness restored via the
Inspector's own Ajv check on the default path.
npm run ci green: validate (web 3087 / cli 212 / tui 274 / launcher 5),
coverage (>=90 per-file, all clients), smoke (launcher/cli/web), storybook
(410).

Adds enterprise-managed authorization (EMA): browser-side IdP login + RFC 8693 token-exchange and JWT-bearer resource-token mint, per-server EMA opt-in in Server Settings, IdP config in Client Settings, and IdP clientSecret keychain storage. Includes the v2/main merge and review follow-ups (400 on malformed client config; normalizeIdpIssuer import consolidation).
Ports the CLI, TUI, and launcher from v1.5 into v2 behind a single
`mcp-inspector` entrypoint (launcher → web/cli/tui). Includes the
`mcp-inspector --web --dev` launcher fix (Vite alias resolution + prod-server
double-start), the root `postinstall` install cascade with simplified CI, and
spec/AGENTS docs (no-workspaces rationale, Development setup).
Closes#1246.
