## Motivation and Context
<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
We keep bumping `go 1.26.x` across the repo every time a new Go patch
drops
## How Has This Been Tested?
<!-- Have you tested this in a real application? Which scenarios were
tested? -->
- **`go.mod` / `deploy/go.mod`**: `go 1.25.8` → `go 1.26` (minor only —
"this module needs Go 1.26")
- **All CI workflows**: `go-version-file: 'go.mod'` → `go-version:
'stable'` — CI always uses the latest stable Go, no more
bump PRs
- **govulncheck**: removed hardcoded `go-version-input: '1.26.1'` →
`go-version-input: 'stable'`

## Motivation and Context
Fixes#637
Server lifecycle management (deprecation and yanking) is a standard
requirement for package registries. Use cases like rebranding, security
vulnerabilities, and end-of-life servers demand the ability to mark
servers as deprecated or deleted, with optional messaging to guide
consumers toward alternatives.
## Changes
### New API endpoints
- **`PATCH /v0/servers/{serverName}/versions/{version}/status`** —
Update the lifecycle status of a single server version
- **`PATCH /v0/servers/{serverName}/status`** — Update the lifecycle
status of all versions of a server in a single transaction
Both endpoints accept:
```json
{
"status": "active|deprecated|deleted",
"statusMessage": "Optional message (max 500 chars) explaining the change"
}
```
### New CLI command
- **`mcp-publisher status <serverName> [version]`** — Update server
lifecycle status from the command line
- `--status` (required): `active`, `deprecated`, or `deleted`
- `--message`: Optional status message
- `--all-versions`: Apply to all versions of the server (replaces the
`<version>` argument)
### API response changes
`RegistryExtensions` now includes two new fields:
- `statusChangedAt` — Timestamp of the last status change
- `statusMessage` — Optional free-form message (e.g., deprecation
reason, migration guidance)
### List endpoint changes
- New `include_deleted` query parameter on `GET /v0/servers` — defaults
to `false`, hiding deleted servers from listings
- When `updated_since` is provided, `include_deleted` is automatically
set to `true` for incremental sync
### Database
- Migration `013_add_status_fields.sql`: Adds `status_changed_at` (NOT
NULL, initialized from `published_at`) and `status_message` columns to
the `servers` table
### Design decisions (from review discussion)
- **Dedicated status endpoints** rather than overloading the existing
edit endpoint
- **Bidirectional status transitions** — all transitions between
`active`, `deprecated`, and `deleted` are allowed
- **`statusMessage` as free-form text** — no structured `nextName` or
`alternativeUrl` fields (per maintainer feedback, to avoid complexity
around chaining, trust transfer, etc.)
- **Publish permission** grants status change access (not limited to
admin/edit)
- **Status message auto-cleared** when transitioning back to `active`
Good, now I have the full picture. Here's the addendum:
### Consumer-facing API changes
The new status fields live inside
`_meta["io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official"]` on every
`ServerResponse`. This is the existing `RegistryExtensions` object — two
new fields are added alongside the existing ones:
**Before:**
```json
{
"server": { "name": "com.example/my-server", "...": "..." },
"_meta": {
"io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official": {
"status": "active",
"publishedAt": "2025-06-01T00:00:00Z",
"updatedAt": "2025-06-15T00:00:00Z",
"isLatest": true
}
}
}
```
**After:**
```json
{
"server": { "name": "com.example/my-server", "...": "..." },
"_meta": {
"io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official": {
"status": "deprecated",
"statusChangedAt": "2026-02-01T12:00:00Z",
"statusMessage": "Deprecated in favor of com.example/my-server-v2",
"publishedAt": "2025-06-01T00:00:00Z",
"updatedAt": "2026-02-01T12:00:00Z",
"isLatest": true
}
}
}
```
| New field | Type | Present when |
|-----------|------|-------------|
| `statusChangedAt` | `string` (RFC3339) | Always — initialized to
`publishedAt` for existing records |
| `statusMessage` | `string` (max 500 chars) | Only when set —
`null`/omitted for active servers (auto-cleared on transition to active)
|
These fields appear on **every endpoint that returns a
`ServerResponse`**: `GET /v0/servers`, `GET /v0/servers/{name}`, `GET
/v0/servers/{name}/versions/{version}`, and the new PATCH status
endpoints.
### List endpoint filtering
`GET /v0/servers` gains an `include_deleted` query parameter:
| Scenario | Behavior |
|----------|----------|
| No `include_deleted` param | Deleted servers hidden (default `false`)
|
| `include_deleted=true` | Deleted servers included in results |
| `updated_since` provided | `include_deleted` forced to `true` for
incremental sync |
## How Has This Been Tested?
- Unit tests for status handler (`status_test.go`) covering status
transitions, permission checks, validation errors, and the all-versions
endpoint
- Unit tests for the CLI command (`status_test.go`)
- Integration with existing server/edit handler tests
- Database layer tests for the new status update and query methods
- Tested locally with `make dev-compose`

## Motivation and Context
<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
This resolves
https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/issues/738. There are
two issues with the NuGet.org integration today:
1. Change the `registryBaseUrl` for NuGet to
`https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json`. `https://api.nuget.org` is not
the entry point for our service and is not specific enough.
`https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json` is the value that users put into
their tooling to connect to our public registry (it is installed by
default in .NET client tooling).
2. Use the service index API to get the URL pattern for package READMEs.
- This URL is not guaranteed to be stable. The service index URL
(`registryBaseUrl`) is, however.
Additionally, I polished up the error messages so various error modes
are clearer. When packages are published to NuGet.org, they take 2-5
minutes to become available due to validations we run.
Some possible states that are now handled and described more helpfully
are:
- Version exists, but the package has no README
- The ID exists, but the version does not
- The ID does not exist at all
There are only 3 authors (me, another MSFT person, and a community
member) explicitly setting the old value. The DB migration will fix the
issue. A future publish will fail with the validation error but the
error message is clear.
`registry type and base URL do not match: 'https://api.nuget.org' is not
valid for registry type 'nuget'. Expected:
https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json`
## How Has This Been Tested?
<!-- Have you tested this in a real application? Which scenarios were
tested? -->
- Unit tests, new and existing
- Manual test locally
- Set old data in the DB, `docker compose up`, confirm the migration
updates the specific package
## Breaking Changes
Yes, but minimal impact expected, unless there is a dependency on the
specific `https://api.nuget.org` value downstream. I am not aware of any
such dependency, and the new value is more proper and specific.

<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
The following PR fixes an issue we introduced on September, 30th that
caused some of the migrations to not apply. This PR fixes it. After
merging we'll have to reset staging as this would not work there (this
is expected).

## Summary
Fixes staging deployment by renumbering migrations to match what staging
has already applied.
## Problem
Staging already applied migration 008 (metadata separation) before we
inserted the new cleanup migration. When we added the cleanup as 008 and
renumbered metadata to 009, staging tried to apply 009 again and failed
with "column already exists".
## Current State
- **Staging**: Has run original 008 (metadata separation), marked as
complete. Failed trying to run 009 (which is the same migration
renumbered).
- **Production**: Has not run either 008 or 009 yet.
## Solution
- Rename `008_clean_invalid_data.sql` → `007a_clean_invalid_data.sql`
- Rename `009_separate_official_metadata.sql` →
`008_separate_official_metadata.sql` (back to original)
## How This Fixes It
With this renumbering:
1. **Staging behavior**:
- Sees 008 is already complete (the metadata migration it already ran)
- Sees 007a as new and runs it, but it will be a no-op (skips because
staging doesn't have the problematic production data)
- Continues normally
2. **Production behavior**:
- Runs 007a (cleanup migration) - removes invalid data
- Runs 008 (metadata separation) - applies successfully because data is
now clean
- Both migrations run in the correct order as intended
## Testing
- Verified migration order works correctly
- Tested on empty database (test environment) - 007a skips as expected
- Tested with production data snapshot - 007a cleans data, 008 applies
successfully
This is a critical fix to unblock staging deployment.
## Summary
This PR adds two important improvements to ensure data integrity:
1. **Adds server name format validation at the API layer** to match the
database constraint from migration 008
2. **Includes migration 008 to clean up invalid data** before applying
strict constraints in migration 009
## Changes
### Server Name Validation
- Enforces validation at the API layer matching the database constraint
- **Namespace pattern**: `[a-zA-Z0-9][a-zA-Z0-9.-]*[a-zA-Z0-9]`
- Must start and end with alphanumeric characters
- Can contain dots and hyphens in the middle
- **Name pattern**: `[a-zA-Z0-9][a-zA-Z0-9._-]*[a-zA-Z0-9]`
- Must start and end with alphanumeric characters
- Can contain dots, underscores, and hyphens in the middle
- Provides clear, user-friendly error messages indicating which part is
invalid
- Uses DRY approach with composed regex patterns
### Migration 008: Data Cleanup
- Removes servers with invalid names or empty versions (5 servers
affected in production)
- Fixes invalid status values by setting them to 'active' (1 server
affected)
- Removes duplicate name+version combinations
- Includes comprehensive safety checks to prevent accidental data loss
- Must run before migration 009 which adds strict constraints
## Testing
- All validator tests pass
- Migration includes safety checks that match production data
- CI verification included

## Summary
- Fixes migration 008 failing with "column contains null values" error
- Adds COALESCE protection to handle 126 servers without status fields
- Includes test utilities to reproduce and verify fixes with production
data
## Problem
Migration 008 was failing in production because:
- 126 out of 781 servers have no `status` field in their JSON
- When extracting `rec.value->>'status'`, these became NULL values
- The `ALTER TABLE servers ALTER COLUMN status SET NOT NULL` constraint
then failed
## Solution
1. **Prevent NULLs during migration**: Use COALESCE to provide 'active'
default when status is NULL/empty
2. **Enhanced debugging**: Added RAISE NOTICE statements to log
problematic values
3. **Safety check**: Double-check that throws exception if any NULLs
remain
4. **Test utilities**: Created mirror_data tools to test migrations with
real production data
## Testing
Created and used `scripts/mirror_data/` tools to:
- Fetch all 781 servers from production API
- Load them into a test database
- Verify the migration fix works correctly
### Results:
- **Before fix**: 126 NULL status values created during migration
- **After fix**: 0 NULL status values, all servers have valid status
- Migration completes successfully with NOT NULL constraint
## Test plan
- [x] Tested locally with production data using mirror_data tools
- [x] Verified 0 NULL values after migration (vs 126 before)
- [x] Confirmed NOT NULL constraint adds successfully
- [ ] Deploy to staging and verify migration succeeds
- [ ] Monitor production deployment

## Problem
Production deployment is failing with CrashLoopBackOff. Migration 008
fails with:
```
ERROR: column "status" of relation "servers" contains null values (SQLSTATE 23502)
```
## Root Cause
The migration extracts the `status` field from an unexpected location in
the data structure.
### Actual Data Structure (Before Migration)
In the current format, `status` is at the **top level** of the JSON, not
nested in official metadata:
```json
{
"name": "com.example/server",
"version": "1.0.0",
"status": "active", ← STATUS IS HERE (top level)
"_meta": {
"io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official": {
"serverId": "uuid",
"publishedAt": "2025-09-01T00:00:00Z",
"isLatest": true
// NO STATUS FIELD HERE
}
}
}
```
For 120 out of 765 servers, the status field is **missing entirely**:
```json
{
"name": "com.biodnd/agent-ip",
"version": "0.1.2",
// ← NO STATUS FIELD AT ALL
"_meta": {
"io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official": {
"serverId": "uuid",
"publishedAt": "2025-09-23T09:47:07Z",
"isLatest": true
// STILL NO STATUS FIELD HERE
}
}
}
```
### Original Migration Logic
```sql
IF official_meta IS NOT NULL THEN
UPDATE servers
SET
status = (official_meta->>'status'), -- Extracts NULL for all servers
```
**Result:**
- All 765 servers would have NULL status extracted
- Because `official_meta->>'status'` returns NULL (field doesn't exist
there)
- The migration tries to add `NOT NULL` constraint → fails
### Fixed Migration Logic
```sql
IF official_meta IS NOT NULL THEN
UPDATE servers
SET
status = COALESCE(NULLIF(rec.value->>'status', 'null'), 'active'),
```
**Result:**
- Extracts from top-level JSON where status actually exists
- `NULLIF(rec.value->>'status', 'null')` handles edge case of literal
string "null"
- `COALESCE(..., 'active')` provides fallback when status is missing
- All servers get valid status value
### Impact Breakdown
**645 servers with `"status": "active"`:**
- Before fix: Would extract NULL → migration fails
- After fix: Extracts "active" correctly
**120 servers with missing status field:**
- Before fix: Would extract NULL → migration fails
- After fix: Defaults to 'active' via COALESCE
## Example Servers with Missing Status
(First 9 discovered during investigation)
- com.biodnd/agent-ip
- io.github.jkakar/cookwith-mcp
- com.joelverhagen.mcp/Knapcode.SampleMcpServer
- io.github.Lyellr88/marm-mcp-server

- io.github.timheuer/sampledotnetmcpserver
- io.github.CodeCraftersLLC/local-voice-mcp
- com.biodnd/agent-fin
- io.github.ruvnet/ruv-swarm
## Testing
Verified against production data (765 total servers):
- ✅ All servers have official metadata
- ✅ None have status in official metadata (expected)
- ✅ 645 have "status": "active" at top level
- ✅ 120 have missing status field (no field present)
- ✅ Fix extracts from correct location for all cases
## Impact
This unblocks production deployment. Once merged and released as v1.2.1,
the migration will:
1. Extract status from the correct location (top-level JSON)
2. Handle missing status fields with sensible defaults
3. Successfully add NOT NULL constraint
4. Allow pods to start normally

## Summary
Fixes a race condition where a server could have no version marked as
`isLatest` if the database operations failed independently.
## Changes
- **CreateServer signature**: Now accepts `oldLatestVersionID` parameter
to atomically unmark previous latest version
- **PostgreSQL implementation**: Uses a transaction to ensure UPDATE
(unmark old latest) and INSERT (create new version) happen atomically
- **Service layer**: Maintains `WithPublishLock` for concurrent
operation serialization
- **Two-level protection**: Advisory lock prevents races, transaction
ensures atomicity
## Test plan
- [x] Existing race condition tests pass
- [x] Integration tests pass
- [x] Unit tests pass

<!-- Provide a brief summary of your changes -->
## Motivation and Context
<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
The follow PR removes the in-memory database option from the registry.
We had a chat about this with @domdomegg and although it is supposed to
be convenient, it isn't that useful in reality. We want to test and
develop the registry in a setup that is closer to the environment it is
supposed to be run. One of the main reasons are:
* We don't use it anywhere else besides unit testing and potentially
local development. Instead we should use postgresql for reliable results
(in-memory was actually giving false positive results)
* We have to keep maintaining it and make sure it mimics the behaviour
we have for postgresql which is not yielding a lot of value
## How Has This Been Tested?
<!-- Have you tested this in a real application? Which scenarios were

Yes, I've updated the test unit make target to run in the postgresql
environment and now we can see the race condition issue happening.

## Summary
Fixes race conditions in concurrent server publishing that could result
in data integrity violations:
- Multiple versions marked as `isLatest=true` for the same server
- Duplicate (serverId, version) combinations
- Same server name assigned different serverIDs
## Solution
Uses two complementary approaches for correctness:
### 1. PostgreSQL Advisory Locks
- Serializes concurrent publishes per server name using
`pg_advisory_xact_lock`
- Uses FNV-1a hash to convert server name to lock ID
- Transaction-scoped locks auto-release on commit/rollback
- **Required after #465**: The serverId introduction means concurrent
publishes must atomically coordinate whether to reuse an existing
serverId (for additional versions) or generate a new one (for first
version). Without locks, race conditions would assign different
serverIDs to versions of the same server.
### 2. Unique Constraints (Migration 007)
Two new indexes provide data integrity guarantees:
- **idx_unique_server_version**: Ensures (serverId, version) is unique
across all versions
- **idx_unique_latest_version**: Partial index ensuring only one version
per serverId has `isLatest=true`
These constraints serve as defense-in-depth safety nets. Even if lock
logic had a bug, the database would reject integrity violations.
Also drops redundant `idx_servers_version_id` since `version_id` is
already the primary key.
## Why WithPublishLock validation is needed after #465
The `ctx.Err()` check at the start of `WithPublishLock` is critical
because:
1. After #465 introduced serverId, the publish flow must atomically
check existing versions and assign/reuse serverId
2. If the context is cancelled during lock acquisition, we could
deadlock
3. Checking ctx validity before acquiring locks prevents these deadlocks
## Testing
Added `TestPublishConcurrentVersionsNoRace` with 100 concurrent
goroutines publishing different versions of the same server. All succeed
with:
- Exactly one version marked as latest
- All versions sharing the same serverId
- No duplicate (serverId, version) combinations
NB: this only covers the in memory db, not the postgres db. It'd be nice
to write tests for this one as well, but our current setup is a bit
annoying for this. Separately looking into ways to easily run all our
tests with real postgres and ideally scrap memory.go completely.

Wielded Claude Code to do this; across many iterations and have reviewed
all the code + largely rewritten the PR commentary here.
This PR implements the server ID consistency changes from
[#396](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/issues/396). Our
goal is to:
- Rename `id` to `versionId` to make it clear that it is the ID for a
specific version, not a server
- Introduce `serverId` as a net new concept. This will be 1:1 with
`name`. While not strictly necessary (we could just use name as a PK),
the convention of having a UUID as an ID on our objects is just a
helpful subjective architecture decision. Plus also leaves open the door
to reconsidering the "should we allow renames" question.
## Key Changes
### 🗄️ Database Schema Changes
- **Renamed**: `id` column → `version_id` (unique identifier for each
server version)
### 📋 Metadata Structure Updates
- **JSON Schema**: Updated
`_meta.io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official` to include:
- `serverId`: Consistent ID across all versions of a server
- `versionId`: Unique ID for this specific version (renamed from `id`)
### 🔧 API Endpoint Updates
- **New endpoint structure**: Changed from version-ID-based to
server-ID-based URLs:
- `GET /v0/servers/{server_id}` - Get latest version of server
- `GET /v0/servers/{server_id}?version=X.X.X` - Get specific version
- `GET /v0/servers/{server_id}/versions` - List all versions of a server
- `PUT /v0/servers/{server_id}?version=X.X.X` - Edit specific version
- **Consistent URL patterns**: All server endpoints now use `server_id`
as the primary identifier
### Database Migration Strategy
The migration (`005_add_server_id_rename_version_id.sql`):
1. Adds new `version_id` column
2. Generates deterministic UUIDs for servers with the same name
3. Updates JSON metadata to add `serverId` and rename `id` to
`versionId`
4. Copies existing `id` values to `version_id` column
5. Drops old `id` column and makes `version_id` the new primary key
## Testing
Besides of course automated tests passing, I:
1. Set up my local db with the pre-005-migration state, imported all the
production data
2. Ran the migration
3. Spot checked some diffs of the data that resulted --
```json
## Motivation and Context
<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
The following PR should fix the recent "conn busy" issue caused by the
PostgreSQL implementation using a single database connection (*pgx.Conn)
instead of a connection pool (*pgxpool.Pool). When multiple concurrent
requests try to access the endpoint, they would conflict trying to use
the same connection.
## Summary
Simplified the schema structure by:
- Replacing `version_detail.version` with direct `version` field
- Removing unused `release_date` field from seed data
- Updating all API types, models, and tests to match new structure
- Maintaining backwards compatibility in API responses
This change makes the schema more intuitive and reduces nesting depth.
## Summary
- Adds `updated_since`, `search`, and `version` query parameters to `GET
/v0/servers`
- Enables incremental synchronization via RFC3339 timestamp filtering
- Provides simple substring search on server names
- Supports latest version filtering with `version=latest`
This implementation provides the core filtering capabilities needed for
efficient registry synchronization and improved server discovery.
Fixes#291Fixes#135
## Summary
Updates the `_meta` field structure to be compliant with the MCP
specification by using proper `prefix/name` format for vendor
extensions.
### Changes
- **Registry metadata**: `io.modelcontextprotocol.registry` →
`io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official`
- **Publisher metadata**: `publisher` →
`io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/publisher-provided`
- **Database migration**: Updates indexes to use new field paths
- **Updated all code**: Service layer, validators, tests, and seed data
### Format Before
```json
{
"_meta": {
"publisher": { "license": "MIT" },
"io.modelcontextprotocol.registry": { "id": "...", "is_latest": true }
}
}
```
### Format After
```json
{
"_meta": {
"io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/publisher-provided": { "license": "MIT" },
"io.modelcontextprotocol.registry/official": { "id": "...", "is_latest": true }
}
}
```
This resolves the naming collision with the planned top-level
`publisher` field and ensures compliance with MCP specification
requirements.
## Motivation and Context
The database logic was getting a bit unwieldy and fragile - especially
because business logic that should really have lived at the registry
service level was being pushed into the persistence level.
This PR tightens the interface, simplifies the code there, as well as
rips out a bunch of mocks etc. we don't need.
## How Has This Been Tested?
Locally everything works
## Breaking Changes
The list endpoint was surprisingly always filtering for isLatest only,
which seems like a bug? I have removed this filter.
Originally by @dmartinol. This branch is an attempt by @domdomegg to fix
the merge conflicts...
## Motivation and Context
Closes#145
Add comprehensive validation for named arguments in MCP server packages
to ensure argument names, values, and defaults follow proper format
conventions. This prevents common issues where argument names contain
embedded values or descriptions, and where values/defaults incorrectly
start with the argument name itself.
Key changes:
- Add ArgumentValidator with validation rules for named argument format
- Enhance PackageValidator to validate runtime and package arguments
- Update import process to log warnings for invalid servers instead of
failing
- Fix 396 servers in seed.json with malformed named arguments
- Extended `validate-examples` tool to apply the object validator (it
was completely missed before)
- Add comprehensive test coverage for all validation scenarios
Examples of fixes applied:
- "--directory <path>" → "--directory" with value "<path>"
- "--with-editable $REPO" → "--with-editable" with value "$REPO"
- "recipient@example.com" → "--recipient" (proper argument naming)
All servers now pass validation during both API publishing and data
import.
## How Has This Been Tested?
With ad-hoc unit tests.
Manual integration tests of built artifact and the seed data.
## Breaking Changes
New registrations need to follow the argument name conventions,
otherwise the import would fail for the inconsistent servers.
## Motivation and Context
<!-- Why is this change needed? What problem does it solve? -->
The following PR eliminates duplicate struct definitions by migrating
the publisher tool to use canonical types from pkg/model, creating a
single source of truth across the codebase. The publisher tool
previously had its own copies of structs that were duplicated, ie.
ServerJSON, Package, Repository, VersionDetail, EnvironmentVariable,
RuntimeArgument and a few others which was not optimal
**Changes in the PR:**
- Refactored the structs to single canonical types located at pkg/model
- Refactor the implementation to use/build canonical structures directly
- Remove all duplicate definitions (5 structs eliminated)
- Publisher now uses model.ServerJSON, model.Package, model.Repository,
etc.
- Renamed some of the structs to better reflect their use case, i.e.
ServerJSON instead of ServerDetail
- Fixes an issue where the Remote property was missing from the previous
publisher copy of the Server
**Benefits:**
- Single source of truth - Schema changes in one place
- Type safety - Compiler catches mismatches
- Enhanced validation - Field constraints and bson tags
- Zero breaking changes - Same CLI interface and JSON output
- Future-proof - New canonical fields automatically available
## Summary
Implements `PUT /v0/servers/{id}` admin edit endpoint to address part of
issue #182, providing an API-based solution for server moderation
without requiring direct database access.
- **New endpoint**: `PUT /v0/servers/{id}` for editing existing servers
- **Security**: Uses existing JWT auth with `PermissionActionEdit`
permissions
- **Anti-undelete protection**: Added `ServerStatusDeleted` status that
cannot be reverted
- **Full implementation**: Database, service, API, and comprehensive
test coverage
## Key Use Cases
- Mark malicious servers as `deleted` for takedown
- Update server metadata for moderation actions
Related to: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/registry/issues/182
(but that is not _done_ yet because we need admins to be able to login
(probably with #283), and need to add docs on how to do the takedown,
and probably guidelines on what we will/won't takedown)
## Motivation and Context
- Add MCPB as a new registry_name option
- Add file_hashes field to package model for integrity verification
- Implement URL validation restricting MCPB packages to GitHub/GitLab
hosts
- Require SHA-256 hash for all MCPB packages
- Add example MCPB package in documentation
- Update schemas and OpenAPI specification
This implements the versioning approach agreed upon in issue #158:
## Key Changes
### Documentation
- Added comprehensive versioning guide (docs/versioning.md)
- Updated FAQ with versioning guidance and best practices
- Enhanced schema description with SHOULD recommendations
### Schema Updates
- Added 255-character limit for version strings in schema.json
- Enhanced version field description with semantic versioning guidance
### Implementation
- New isSemanticVersion() function for proper semver detection
- Enhanced compareSemanticVersions() with prerelease support
- Implemented compareVersions() strategy:
* Both semver: use semantic comparison
* Neither semver: use timestamp comparison
* Mixed: semver versions always take precedence
- Updated publish logic to determine "latest" using new strategy
- Added version length validation (255 char max)
### Versioning Strategy
1. Version MUST be string up to 255 characters
2. SHOULD use semantic versioning for predictable ordering
3. SHOULD align with package versions to reduce confusion
4. MAY use prerelease labels for registry-specific versions
5. Registry attempts semver parsing, falls back to timestamp ordering
6. Clients SHOULD follow same comparison logic
<!-- Provide a brief summary of your changes -->
This PR serves as a placeholder and brings together all of the changes
related to supporting vendor extensions passed through the API. The idea
is to have a single place to track and review the work as it comes
together (even if it’s still a bit of a work in progress).
**The changes in this PR cover:**
* Updates on the data model
* Updates on both databases (in-memory and postgresql), added a new
table to PSQL for tracking the extensions leaving the server table only
for the clean server.json properties
* Updates the seed.json file (thus the big line change)
* Adds a seed-migrate tool to help migrating an existing seed file to
the new format
* Updates the seed import mechanism to support this
* Updates the existing tests - unit, integration and validation tests
* Adds the publish handler to the OpenAPI spec (it was missing)
* Fixes linting errors
* Updates on the API side on (publish, list, get) to support the new
format of `ServerResponse` -
```
{
"server": {},
"x-io.modelcontextprotocol.registry": {}, /*not available for publish since this gets populated by the registry*/
"x-publisher": {}
}

## Additional context
I have not implemented connection pooling support for simplicity, and
because cloudnative-pg already provides built-in connection pooling with
pgBouncer so if we want it later we can switch to this endpoint easily.
## Motivation and Context
Currently there's a lot of unsafe manual JSON unmarshalling/marshalling,
and we have to manually keep the openapi schema in sync.
This PR migrates the API to
[Huma](https://github.com/danielgtaylor/huma), which appears like a
popular, well-maintained way to build APIs in Golang. I'm not a Golang
expert, but seemed highly recommended by Reddit + Claude and has a
decent star count. It provides automatic openapi spec generation and
docs hosting, JSON parsing, as well as the ability to add auth
middlewares etc.
## How Has This Been Tested?
Running locally, and poking at the endpoints
## Breaking Changes
Docs are served at `/docs` rather than `/v0/swagger/index.html` now

This PR simplifies the seed data import configuration based on
maintainer feedback by removing command line flags and using a clearer
environment variable name.
## Key Changes
### Configuration Simplification
- **Renamed**: `MCP_REGISTRY_SEED_FILE_PATH` → `MCP_REGISTRY_SEED_FROM`
- **Removed**: `--seed-file-path` command line flag to eliminate
configuration complexity
### Improved User Experience
Users now configure seed data import using a single, clear environment
variable:
```bash
# Before (multiple ways to configure)
MCP_REGISTRY_SEED_FILE_PATH=data/seed.json ./registry
./registry --seed-file-path=data/seed.json
# After (simplified single method)
MCP_REGISTRY_SEED_FROM=data/seed.json ./registry
```
### Registry Composability
The composability workflow is now simplified while maintaining all
functionality:
```bash
# Start first registry with seed data
MCP_REGISTRY_SEED_FROM=data/seed.json ./registry
# Start second registry importing from first via pagination
MCP_REGISTRY_SEED_FROM=http://localhost:8080 ./registry
```
## Technical Implementation
- Maintains full backward compatibility for import functionality
- All existing seed data sources continue to work (local files, HTTP
URLs, registry URLs)
- Automatic pagination through `/v0/servers` endpoint remains unchanged
- Configurable delays between requests preserved
## Benefits
- **Reduced complexity**: Single configuration method instead of
multiple
- **Clearer naming**: `SEED_FROM` better describes the source of seed
data
- **Easier maintenance**: Fewer configuration paths to test and document
- **Consistent patterns**: Aligns with other environment-variable-only
configuration
All existing functionality is preserved while providing a cleaner, more
maintainable configuration interface.

This is a first PR for #159 - adding some validation scripts. I want to
get to a place where we are confident that making schema changes is in
sync with the rest of our code. Step one is making sure the schemas are
in sync with our examples. Step two will be making sure the schemas are
in sync with our actual Registry implementation code.
This is just for the JSON right now; if we're feeling good about this
approach I'll do an analogous change for the OpenAPI schemas as well.
I'll also follow with adding usage of these scripts to our CI pipeline
so we have automated checks on them with every change.
## Summary
- Added CLI validation tools for JSON schemas and examples in
`docs/server-json/`
- Fixed some minor validation errors found in `examples.md`
- Ensures schema consistency and example validity in CI/CD pipelines
## Changes
### New Validation Tools
1. **`tools/validate-schemas`** - Validates that `schema.json` and
`registry-schema.json` are valid JSON Schema documents
2. **`tools/validate-examples`** - Validates all JSON examples in
`examples.md` against both schemas
### Key Features
- ✅ Validates JSON schema syntax and structure
- ✅ Validates all examples against both base and registry schemas
- ✅ Tracks validation counts to prevent silent failures
- ✅ Proper exit codes for CI integration
- ✅ Clear error messages for debugging
### Fixes to examples.md
- Added missing `repository.id` field in NuGet example
- Changed `repository.source` from "gitlab" to "github" in Docker
example
### Usage
```bash
# From repository root
./tools/validate-schemas.sh
./tools/validate-examples.sh
```
## Testing
I ran these scripts locally with minor (breaking) changes, which they
each correctly reported. As submitted, they are both passing.
